Young. - it g & | -~ Phonograph Was Saved. ‘A small home three miles east of Elkhart just off the Bristol road, owned and occupied by William Dorrier and his wife and eight children, was completely destroyed by fire at noon Saturday. An oil stove on which dinner was being prepared flared and the flames quickly enveloped the entire house. The parents of the children and the eldest son were in HElkhart at the time. : Neighbore quickly gathered on the scene but the fire ‘was'so_fa'r advanced that only a phonograph two chairs and a small amount of bedding was saved. ‘There was no insurance. '

' Veterans of the Spanish-American war representing 1,500 camps in the United States will gather at Michigan City September 7 to 11 for their twenty-sixth annual encampment. Indiana will be represented by veterans from 80 camps in the state. Sunday the first day of the convention will be devoted to registration and memorial services. Several speakers of national repute will participate in the services. Harry Kegg Estate. The Goshen News-Times in speak|ing of the death of Harry Kegg gives his age as 65 years. That paper says further: : “Mr. Kegg left no family, his wife preceding in death over a year ago. Having no direct heirs his property will revert to his nearest kin, Mrs. Brown of Kendallville and two brothers in Ligonier. His estate is valued at $25,000.” L
‘Day W:is Quiet. - F. M. Henney, Cromwell furniture merchant and undertaker was in the city Wednesday and paid the Banner office a visit. He said despite the large and mixed crowd at the big Labor Day celebration Monday everything passed off quietly with no trouble of any kind reported. - David Burtfijfield. David Burtsfield, 81 years old, a resident of New Paris for 31 years and a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home shortly after seven o'clock Sunday evening. Mr. Burtsfield suffered a stroke of apoplexy at three o’cloeck Sunday afternoon and a second stroke at about severn. Changes Home Address. George T. Wingard writing from Eéstwood, New York, says he has changed his address from 333 South Collingwood avenue to 112 - South Collingwood avenue. The writer says, “we would greatly miss the Banner. if it did not come, bringing news from the old home town”. - Former Warsaw Dentist Dead. ~ Dr. William H. Eggleston 75 years old for many years a dentist at Warsaw was found dead in his bed at his home in Alhambra Calif, Friday Lnight. Dr. ”Eg‘g?,es:t-bn left Worsaw last June. ’

Education Pays in Leader- | | ship, Influence and Honors An investigation published by the United States Bureau of Education shows that of all the people in the United States who have performed distingui ished service and received high honors that there was: One person out of each 150,000 who had no schooling. & . ' : : One person out of each 37,5600 with a common school education. One person out of each 1,724 with a high school education. - One ptson ot ot eh 187 with a college eucation. - The above lines show the comparative chances of no sehooling and with the different grades of education. Parents who give their children a common school education give them four times the chance to become a leader and receive distinetion that the child with no schooling has. Those who give their children a high school education give them 87 times the chance, and ‘the parents who sacrifice and give their children a college education give them more than 800 times the chance of the child without schooling.—E.
