Freed age 57 who was born near Corunna but had lived in the west mostly in Colorado for 23 years dropped dead on May 19 at Colorado Springs. - Relatives includ. ing his niece Mrs. Oak Husselman of Auburn had not heard of him for many years and did not know of his death until a few days ago when they saw an item in a Fort Wayne newspaper telling of Freeds’ death anu saying that he had formerly lived near Fort Wayne. The body was brought to Garrett for burial. Another brother, John B. Freed also a_ railroaq man went west with Elliott but they separated more ' than twenty years ago. -John died about ten years agc and it is thought Elliott never knew of it

Aged Man Injured.

.~ George Timmis 60 of LaGrange —isi suffering with several “broken ribs face lacerations an injured left arm and possibly a punctured lung the result of being run down Thursday by an automobile driven by Mrs. John Rogers of Albion. - Timmis who is president of the Chamber of Commerce and, owner of a meat market was driving a herd oi cattle to the slaughter house when the accident occurred. The woman in the car is said to have sounded her auto horn but apparently Timmis did not hear her fo rhe stepped directly in front of the machine. , | o : | { Hildebrand Changes Plea. ~ Thomas L. Hildebrand former cas‘hier of the Fjrst National Bank of Columbia City ‘will be sentenced June 1: in Federal Court for violating the national banking act. |Hildebrand whc changed his plea to guilty Thursday was to be. given until June 30, bul when he was unable to provide bong raised from $lO,OOO to $25,000 Judge Albert B. Anderson ordered him tc appear in court next Thursday. The law provides a maximum penalty of five years for each of tex ;counts of the indictment charging him with making false entries.

Dies of Injuries.

‘Wilbur Ulrey 19 who was injured 10 days ago when a Pennsylvania train struck his motor truck at a crossing near Atwood succumbed to his injuries Thursday afternoon at the MecDon‘alq hospital. He suffered a fracture of the spine and the spinal.cord was severed. He had been paralyzed since the accident but was fully conj ‘scious and for several days showeu ‘some improvement.. Physicians however held no hope for his recovery. | ' Well Entertained. Mrs. Leonard D. Scott of Terre Haute gave a round of entertainments last week in honor of Mrs. Elmer Klotz and her daughter Miss Fredonna who are spending a fortnight in the Vigo county capital guests of Mr. and Mrs. Scott. Several: functions were held compliment;i_énflgr_‘ihe guests from Ligonier at different Terre Haute homes. - e f | Only Get Salt Water. After digging a well 1572 feet on the McNagny farm near Columbia City with all indications of finding oil drillers on going through Trenton rock ,struck salt water and the wel will be abandoned. The company has leases on several .hundred acre: but no announcement has been made as to whether another well will be atthere in recuperating. '’ ; , s R A NS Sueceds Under Handicap. - When Fred Hathaway of South Whitley was just 21 years of age the sight of one eye was destroyed and a few years later the other eye went blind. He then took the state free course of instruction in weaving and he now operates a machine in making carpets and rugs as well as anyone and makes a very good living. * He is only 32 years of age mow. 0

Flyers Caught in Pocket.

Frank Kemp and George Heusi both of LaPorte sufféred broken noses and cuts on the head when their,airplane crashed into the roof of the Ora Ridenour home near the west limits of South Bend Wednesday. The airplane struck an air pocket and before it could be steadied buried its nose in 4 to the roof. 'The damage will -total about -$2,000. A L B e e 3 Fingers Mashed. : - Frances Hartnett submitted to a tonsil operation in Dr. Blacks’ emer. gency hospital Thursday. Henry Tyler was back with several more mangled fingers to be dressed Friday .Mr Tyler is employed in the N. Y. C. freight office and has been unfortunate in heaving fingers mashed. .- Loss to Elkhart Plant, Fire Thursday caused damagc estimated at $4,000 to the main plant of the Bridge &Iron Company at Blk{ hart. The roof of the building was destroyed. It is believed that a hot rivet dropped om a tar-covered roof caused the fire. The log¥ is covered by insurance. ; - Sunday’s Are Home. Evangelist ‘Billy’ -Sunday and wife arrived home at Winona Lake Friday. Both seem much improved in hecalth but plan to spend an indefinite time there is recuperating. :
