Auto Thief Sentenced.
Wallace Nellist 22 who was arrested at Elkhart last Saturday and confess ed to having stolen a Chalmers automobile owned by Ray Pancost has a long police record and was convicted in the Elkhart ecircuit court early in in- 1920 for attempting to hold ur Clarence Landaw near Waterford on the night of December 10 1919, Nellist with another Elkhart youth .attempted to hold up Landow but the victim escaped and when the twg bandits were trailed by several Wat erford men opened fire and wounded Nelson Inebnit. They were later captured the same night after a long chase by officers, :
Nellist was sentenced to Jeffersouville and served two years there.
The State of Fall,
Alonzo McNutt writing form IFarmington! New Mexico where he is spending the winter says - there is much talk there of Fall, the Teapot Domeman and that it is not 'complimentary. Mr. McNutt says the Banner carried him the information that we have had some rather severe winter weather. There he says men are going about in shirt sleeves and in walking up town he sought the shade. After a week or two more in New Mexico Mr. McNutt will leave on a trip to Salt Lake City, then to San Francisco, Los Angles and other western points and will arrive home about April Ist. “The gentleman desires to be remembered to his Ligonier friends.
Money Comes Slowly.

Field examiner of the state board of accounts Tuesday began the work of determaining the amount of refunds to be made to auto owners whc paid excess license fees.’ : Refunds will be made in numerical order begining with license. No. 1, according to H. D. McClelland. McClelland said it will not be necessary for those entitled to refunds to file ciaims. On the theory that the excess ot automobile registration fees paid under the 1923 fee law, can be repaid legally Ed Jackson secretary of state. said Saturday that motorists who paid the fees need not apply for refunds, but will in due time reteive checks refunding to them the amount of excess they paid.
Two Die in Explosion.*
. The explosion of a coal oil stove at the home of Harry Mills a farmer living near LaPorte caused the deati of two persons and burns which may prove fatal to another, Mills filled the stove with a liquid he thought was kerosene, The stove exploded Donald Mills a two year old son and Mrs. Mills were so badl\ burned they died in a short time,
Mills fled from the house with his clothes a mass of flames.” He rolled on the ice and extinguished the fire after he had been seriously burned. :
Death of Bernard Timmons.
Bernard ’i‘immons resident of Rome City the past three years died suddenly Monday morning from apoplexy at the state penal farm, at Putnam: ville where he had been the last two weeks. News of the death was received here. The body arrived in Rome City Tuesday evening about 6 o’clock and was taken to the cottage where the decedent had made his home. Although definite arrangements had not been completed todaw it is probable the funeral services will be held Friday. i .
Morris Goes South.
James Morris will leave Sunday for Florence, Alabama to - settle his father’s estate and look after his own interests. The deceased gentleman was engaged in the immigration business and had large interests in the South. Mr. Morris expects to be ab sent two or three weeks when he wil} return to the management of . the ‘Gutelius store here. o
Receives a Valentine,
Mr. and_Mrs. Tom Kensler who moved to Florida a year ago are the parents of a new son who will answer to the name of .Gordon Lane. The lad arrived on Valentine day. e

Gas Causes Death,
Jacob H. Cole 65 years old was found unconscious in his room at South Bend - Monday night and died shortly after. The gas had been turned on and it is believed that the man committed suicide, :
Taggart to Bermuda,
Thomas Taggart, veteran Indiana democratic leader, arrived in Indianapolis for a short visit before going to Bermuda. Taggart has been ill in the Presbyterian hospital in Chicagon for a month. '
