Educational Value eof “Service Pro. ‘ gress” Speclal, bl " One of the principal reasons for this effort to educate put forth. by tie New York Céntral Railroad Company is to san’ the people they are rot unfairly treated as to raiirsad rates. Propaganda has been spread about high fre:ght rates that has no doubt causei hard feeling for the railroad. “ g " The first car showed. an electric light plant at work in a steel baggage car, This :arnisned lighting power for the whole train of cars. . The next shcwed a ventilated refrigerator car us2d i shipping all sorts .of perizhabie produets. e No. 2353 showed small inodels of all sorts of cars. Here was shown the largest engine in the world with twenty-four driving wheels and an electric engine. used in the Detroit River tunnel as well as models of engines made at different times with speed® varying from fifteen to one ‘hundred miles per hour. bt Next came the DeWitt Clinton engine named for the governor of New York at that time. The Mohawk and Hudson iver railroad was first op-
erated in 1831, from ‘Albany to Schenectady a distance of sixteen miles where the New York Central now operates. The DeWitt Clinton engine had no reverse, no brakes no headlight, no cowcatcher and no safety valve and was constructed at a cost of $B,OOO. Dan Mathews, en: gineer did his own firing the engine was a wood burner and to keep his steam at a safe pressure he would often stop his engine and test the water height by pounding on' the tan but after running the distance thi';; way for seventeen months he perfected a safety valve, by which the steam could escape when the pressure became too great, The 'sécond year of its career the DeWitt Clinton could
‘make sixteen miles an hour and this terrific speed alarmed the people so that the Legislature passed a bill limiting speed to fifteen miles an hour, stating that such speed was flying inthe face of providence. This crude engine hauled three coaches each of which could carry’ fifteen passengers; nine below and six above, and they were charged $1.75 per 100 pounds for the distance of
sixteen miles. The coach shown had 4 leather spring, tanned by hand, the processing of which took, 6 two and one-half years. The spring is ninetyfour years old and is as good as new. Engine 999 was made in 1892 and 1893 made a world speed record of 112.5 miles per hour. - This record has not been broken. The cost was $130,000 and the repairs $30,000, - No. 8000 weights 268 tons, against a little over four tons, weight of DeWitt Clinton and cost $72,000. This engine will haul from 100 to 140 loaded freight cars. £ ; The men in charge were glad to give information and about 1600 persons visited the train during the three hour stay.
