' One hundred and forty-six boys and birls- members of the various club of Noble county ‘were guests Wednesday evening at an elaborate banquet helqi in the Kendallville community builaing. The affair was held under the auspices of the Kendallville Fair asSociation. The banquet was served by the ladies of the M. E. church. During the banquet hour music was furnished by the Mac’s Melody orchestra and Miss Helen Van Dolsen scored a hit in a number. of vocal selections especially “Yes, We Have No Bananas,” J. C. Brunk of Ligonier county Y, M. C. A. secretary led in the co,m"munity singing and also- presided as toastmaster.. (Claude Harper of Purdue also participated in the exercises. :
War Mothers Convention,
The Indiana delegation to the national” convention of the American War Mothers at Kansas City will leave” Indianapolis in a body Sept. 29, Mrs. C. Speed ice of that city announced. The Hoosier war mothers will be entertained in St. Louis by the chapters of that city during an afternoon and evening stopover.’ 400 Ducks and . Geese Stolen. Thieves have stolen between 300 and 400 ducks and geese in Adams county the past week. . :
‘Wake Smith Asks Pardon.
- Wake Smith 24 of near Albion who over a year ago was aéquitted of
shooting his brother Clark Smith age 22 on a plea of insanity bt was committed to state’s prison for imsane as provided by a special act of law, 18 seeking pardon.. Since being in prison Wake has been an’ exemplary prisoner. : The shooting was the ‘outgrowth of a quarrel over baking a batch of bread. Wake did not seem to be an apt pupil at baking and Clark tried to teach him. Wake is alleged to have borrowed a gun from a neighbor and to have shot his brother when the latter walked toward him. |
Incresse State Tax.
Thes tate board of tax commissioners today decided upon a state tax rate of 30 cents for next year, an increase of three cents over the rate of this year. ‘The new rate according to republican state officials will produce $1,600,000 in excess of the necessary current expenses whica amount can be applied on the state debt. On the other' hand Robert Bracken democatic state: auditor insists that the new rate will leave the state with a debt of $3,646,000 at the close of the fiscal year. T

Badly Fractured Arm,
- Granville McDaniel employed in _the‘ Banner Ste!gm Laundry is laid up with a bad fracture of his right arm at the wrist, the result ’d: a kick while -cranking a Ford car about one o’clock Friday. S ¥ - Mr. McDaniel had driven the machine to his home on the North Side and after dinner was in the act of cranking it for the feturn trip when it kicked on him. Dr. Lane was ecalled and found it necessary to take McDaniel to Goshen for an x-ray examination. The break was found to be a bad one the bones of the fractured arm nearly piercing the: flesh. The unfortunate youth will be prevented from work for a long time. F Another Kerosene Fatalty. : Mrs. Maud Grandstaff 36 wife oif Jess - Grandstaff a blacksmith of Georgetown is dead and the Grandstaff home was burned to the ground as the result of an explosion of kerosene, , A e .Mrs. Granstaff was preparing breakfast and attempted to hasten the fire by pouring kerosene in the stove when the oil caught fire and the can exploded. * : - The property damaged caused by the fire is estimated at $3000., One hundred dollars in. currency was burned. { 0 g 7

Mrs. Meldrim according to her attorneys brought action against the colony after being convinced that “King” Benjamin Prunell had been associated with her daughters, Estella and Edith women and girls at Shiloh. Alva Matthews Here, o Alva Matthews who has been employed in the Len Banta Refrigerator factory at Clearfield, Pa., for the past two years arrived at his old home in Ligonier Thursday evening ‘and has been visiting his . many friends. An effort is being made to| have Mr. Matthews remain in this city permanently. . Guy widow ‘of Albert R Guy ‘who died as the result of injurjes: he received while acting as a switchman in the New York Central yards at Elkhart on January ‘l2 last and administratrix of his estate has filed a suit in the superior court of that city against the railroad company for $15,000 damages. ‘ g Dollar Purchasing Power Low. +The purchasing power of the doilar last June based on average wholesale prices for various commodity | groups was equal to only 656 cents as compared with is purchasing power in 1913 according to calculations announced by the bureau of labor statistics of the U.
