~ To Meet Force With Force. Realizing that the police of South Bend intend to continue their cam-f paign of bar-smashing bootleggers most .of whom are in the foreign sec tion of the city sent an ultimatum tc the police that hereafter force: will be met with force and that when the next raid against a place suspected of selling booze is made 'the police will be lucky to 'escape with ' their lives. “We will not rest until Lane Hamilton and Delinski are under the¢ sod,” the threat says. The men re{ferred to are Chief of Police L. J Lane, Capt. Horace Hamilton and Detective' M. Delinski . Chief Lane state - Friday that the . raids will ‘continue although it has been realized for some time that the wetzs wre organizing to combat the police.

Storm Was Severe.

One of the most severe hail - anc windstorms in years visited North Manchester and vicinity Tuesday. Hail stones as large as hen eggs | forced by a north wind damaged crops, shade trees and flower beds Windows in the I. O. O. F. building an dthe skylight of the Rice studic were broken and several hundred dollars of damage was done to the Harry White greenhouses. The large windows on the north side ‘of the Walnut Street -church of the Brathern were broken.! ‘An automobile standing at the curb ‘on Mill street was damaged when a large tree fell on it, : e Corn crops near the town and other vegetation were destroyed by the hail. : . i :

Murder Trial Witness Taken. Russel Brandon 28 of Elkhart a material witness in the trial of Leo Grazier of Elkhart charged with the murder of Louis L. Shirley New York { Central railroad policeman in Elk- | hart April 14 was_arrested at Gibson near Chicago where he was employed in the New York Central shops and is being held on a technical charge of having received stolen goods. When arrested at Gibson he was known as James A. Allen.’ It is said he can give damaging evidence against Grazier who is reported to have shown him a gun that was stolen from the 'Army Goods store in Elkhart. This gun was found, near . where Shirley was killed. S

Never to See Mother Again. | The “man without a country’” had a rival at Sault St. Marie, Mich., ia Fred Litson 27 who is under court orders never again to see his mother’ Mrs, Harriet Litson 71. Litson was convicted in justice court of assault and battery it being charged by his father that he: beat the aged woman and threw her out of the front door of the family home into the street. : After sentence had been passed the father turned to his son. and said: ~ “Please stay away from me too. I don’t ever want to see you again.’, ~ Rather Peculiar Case. In superior court at South Bend Galvin R. Parish has sued Christiana Arndt-Parish .for.- divorce alleging she 'deserted him 23 years ago and itha,t she has returned. They were married in 1881. She left him in 1900 he says and he thought her body ‘was found o nthe ice in Benton Har‘bor Mich., June 18 1906. He married Eldora Sharp. They have two children. . The South Bend arrested George Matych with 25 gallons of moohshine 'Thursday night. A companion escaped although he is believed to have been hit by a policeman. The two men were in an automobile and had stopped to make a delivery of the liquor. - . ' Sentenced to Farm. Frank Vidmar 18 of Elkhart was sentenced to the state penal farm for thirty days on a charge of peeping into windows.
