For‘db Turns Over. . Priscilla Slusher five-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Slusher of Goshen waws severely and perhaps fatally injured and Mr. Slusher suffered the fracture of -three ribs when a Ford automobile he was driving overturned Saturday ,6 night, 15 miles this side of Gary. Mrs. Slusher and another child and = her parents. Mr and Mrs. Charles Egenroad who were also in the car escaped injury. Loose dirt on a newly worked’ road was said to be responsible.for the accident. '

Sterling of Fort Wayne $5O for the damage done to the machine of Cleo Hammend of Kendallville when the two autos came together on the Toledo<Chicago pike Saturday evening. Sterling was arrested at Rome City and brought, to Kendallville spending Saturday -night in the city jail. He assumed responsibility for "the smashup. G

- Has Narrow Escape ~ Lester Landgraf 16 years old of Mishawaka was crowded off a 20° foot diving platferm at Merrifield beach, Mishawaka Sunday and is paralyzed below the waist. Landgraf had been diving from the platform but when he was crowded off unexpectedly he struck the water with his back, and sank. He was_ rescused ‘by: other swimmers who found him on the bottom o fthe river. . '

To Retire Aungust 2. - Joseph C. Beck of Goshen will re. tire from the railway mail service on August 2 after having served con-| tinuously for 36 years. He entered| the service on January 15, 1837 receiving his appointment from the late Hon. George Ford of South - Bend, then a member of congress. Mr, Beck. estimates he has traveled more than 3,000,000 miles—all between Chicagol and Cleveland. e ; ; . _ . | Youths Shown Leniency. Russell Brudi.and Eugene Wilkinson of Fort Wayne were sentenced to jail for sixty days and fined $25 and costs each by Judge Endicott of the DeKalb circuit court on a charge of stealing an automobile tire of Walter Babbitt of Garrett. The jail sentences were suspended on condition the youths remain at home after dark during the period of the sentence.

Hurt iin Auto Accident, 7 A son of Lon Hire residing in the Crow property at Wawasee, suffered a fractured collar bone and the dislocation of a shoulder when his automobile turned over near this city. The injured man was taken to his home and a surgeon summoned. The car was but slightly damaged. All Goes Up in Smoke. i Fire about 10:30 o’clock Thursday evening totally destroyed the farm home of George Teeters north of Mish awaka. Mr. and Mrs. Teeters and children spent tlle day with a daughter in the city and’ returning home itound the house in flames. Nothing was saved . Eetm

‘ Wreck Blocks Trafffic.- ' .. Abroken truck on a freight car on a New York Central freight train east of Waterloo, caused two cars to jump the track blockading traffic for hours. Trains were detoured from Butler via P, C, C & St. L. to Auburn Junction thence over the branch to Waterloo to:the main line. -, Turpentine Draught Fatal. Two-year old Ethel Sarah Lynch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Lynch of South Bend died Sunday afternoon from the poisonous effects of a small quantity of turpentine ‘which she had swallowed 30 hours earlier. The bottle had been left with in her reach. '

Dunmire of south of Elkhart reported to the police there the thefé. of an Oldfield tire, rim and casing and a robe from his automobile while it was parked near the Blue Grass grange hall. Saturday evening while he was eating ice cream at a social. ~ Drowns in Foot of Water. Burl Warnock 5, of near Portland was found dead in one foot of water in a small creek at the rear of his home, by playmates who said they had left the lad earlier in the day asleep on the é¢reek bank. @ =

* Dr. Iris J. Vaughn aged 61 years of Topeka a widely known and prominent physician.of Northern Indiana died very suddenly at noon Tuesday at Dallas lake where he was engaged in catching minnows .Death was due to apoplexy, . e -He was standing in the shallow wa ter of the lake when he suddenly became dizzy and walked to shere ‘where he sat ‘down on bank in front of the Walter Dallas home. He died twenty minutes later, before medical attention could be given him. Dr. Vaughn and wife had gone to the lake for a few days outing at their‘i cottage and he had apparently been enjoying his usual good health uatil stricken Monday he was at Elkiart ‘where he attended a patient during an operation. L ~ Dr. Vaughn had been a resident ol Topeka for a number of years and was recognized as one of the' best physicians in this part of Indiana. He had established a splendid prac-

tice and his frignds were numbered by his acquaintances. . L Surviving besides the widow are a daughter Mrs. Erma Johnston, and two grand children of Pittsburg, Pa, and a brother Tom Vaughn of Topeka.

- Champion Fish Eater. = - Ferd Ackerman who is just home froth a fishing trip to Bear lake is ready to wager that Dr. J. E. Luckey of Wolf Lake is the champion fish eater of Indiana if not of the United States The other morning the landlady of an eating place at Bear Lake fried fifteen large blue gills and Dr. Luckey consumed the entire lot for breakfast and the doctor declared his morning meal is always the lightest ‘one of the day. . 1

' This is “harvest time” for the Ligo infer Artificial Ice plant ‘and tea employees With four motor delivery trucks are trying to keep pace witn demands which is no light task. *~ ' The plant is kept in-operation day and night .in order to keep the big storage house filled to meet emer‘gencies. It is found necessary to add the fourth motor truck to the equipment and this will be done next Monday. . S

It requires the. steady e_mployment‘ of ten people to operate the business and then much night work is done t¢ accomplish this, 5 Deliveries of ice are not confined to this city, although the great bulk of the output goes to Ligonier, but regular trips are made to Topeka, Wawasee, Cromwell, Albion, Kimmell, Wawaka and Brimfield and this fiela could be extended with additional facilities. : e . The Ligonier Artificial Ice Co is a good and profitable institution for tihs city for it not only supplies an abundance of pure ice but gives employ‘ment to labor at a good wage. |

Competes 'With Picture Houses, _The church is competing with the moving ' picture houses and beating them at their own game. | : Every Sunday night the Rev. F W Bostick pastor of the First Baptist church of LaPorte puts on an open air moving picture performanece showing tilms of an educational nature, and 800 to 1,000 attend, while the regular picture houses are practically deserted. . P | Whitfeld is Taken. . John L. Whitfeld wanted in Cleveland, 0., for the murder of Patrol: man Dennis Griffin was. captured Tuesday night’ when surrounded by 25 policemen in Detroit. ' The fugitive who for a time resided in Fort Wayne, had beeén employed in a Detroit lumber yard. S

© Kendallville Reaches Quota. _Kendallville has raised $750 in her Salvation Army drive her full quota. The result of the drive in ‘Ligonier and ‘other portions of the county is not yet known as all the reports are not in. County Chairman W. W. A failure of the successful bidder to enter into such contract and bond upon- the acceptance of his proposal will forfeit the said check and the sum of money payable ‘thereon to said city as agreed and ' stipulated damages for such failure. - ' .
