= LIGONIER, INDIANA

Ligonier, Indiana like most of the proSperous cities of the- state was first setlled by sturdy pionéers from Pennsylvania and many of the .New England states who jland‘ed in the wilderness and laid the foundation for the numerous communities which have deieloped 'into, ‘productive points of commerce and incidentally peace and plenty. : i : r‘ : ~ The name Ligonier was brought from Pennsylvania by Isaac Cavin, one of the founders, who was a native of Ligonier, P. Ligonier Pa, was ‘named after and in honor of Col, Ligo-

nier of Revolutionary War fame, who fought under George Washington the father of the Republic. =~ The spot on whic hthe town stands was for many years a resting place on the great‘ east and west Indian trail and was noted for its wild strawber ries ‘w.-hich grew -in abundance throughout this section in -the summer months. The Elkhart river also abounded in fish and wild deer and other game which furnished the fool supply for the Indian tribes were plentiful. i

The land came to Isaac Cavin hy government grant and believing that its location was favorable for a metropolis that would make his name im-. mortal, he platted eighty acresin 1835 a year before the county was organ ized, and recorded it in the records of LaGrange county. Cavin street one of the first streets named stands as a monument to the founder. |

The first settler was Ward Bradford who built a house on lot No. i, and also had the honor of constructing the first bridge across the BElkhart river at this point. There werc many Settlers however at thiis date in the vicinity of Ligonier, and Isaac Spencer who lived about a mile south was the first to open a general store in a log building. He was the first county clerk and finding merchandiz - ing not very profitable he closed up the store which was opened two years

later by Daniel Stukey. : The first permanent settier in Ligonier vicinity so far as can be tracei was Jacob Wolf who' settled a little west of Ligonier 'as early:as 1831, and those who came to join him wers Gideon Schlotterback, Henry 'Engle, John Hostetter and Adam Engle. Only two or thre families lived in Ligonier in 1840 and almost ten years elapsed after the- platting of (the town before there was any indication that Mr. Cavin's idea began to take shape. sy ~ In 1844 Henry Freer of Fort Wayne opened a general store and the' following year Hugh iller opened the second store The poulation of 1845 was fifty peoplé and when the civil war broke out the -population had reached 1,000. Gk !

' James Latta was the first preacher and landed in 1834, and the first court was held at the house of Adam Engle in 1837. Pl o Ligonier had its first boom in 1852 when it was assured that the Nortkern’ Indiana Railroad: would pass through the village. At this time a number of shrewd business men decid‘ed on Ligonier as a good place to 10cate and bought land and lopened mercantile ' establishments. Several of them were influential and successful Jews, many of whom are still in business or their children. -~ For the size or population there are few towns in the United States which have so many citizens with so high a commercial rating. . .

In 1847 an important industry was established by Taylor Vail manufactured all kinds of iron household utensils besides plow eastings. After passing through Beveral ownerships

pened that the residents many of them, were anxious to have the name of “Main Street” changed to something ‘else, Outsiders thought it was because of the unfavorable newspaper and magazine cominent but such is not the case by any means. As a mat‘ter of fact, the proposition to change the name of Main .street was up’ long before preachers conceived the idea of “Main Street schandal” and Main street supposedly the main business center of any city, is in fact a beautiful residence street, wholly void .of busines establishments thereon. The proposed change was brought up in order that the chief business street of Ligonier would not be confused with the real Main street, in name, but not in business circles. Lgonier has no desire to change any of her street names because of unfavorable comment. We don’t have such com ment here. , { s
