Dies Smoking Cigarette.
Dying in Methodist hospital at Fort ‘Wayne Friday atfernoon from the effects of strychnine taken with suicidal intent, George Welsh 39 evaded trial set for June 6 on a charge of arson brought against him by police detectives some time ago. : ~ After calmly pouring out the full contents of the strychnine bettle 960 grains or sufficient to kill nearly 200 lmen; Welsh swallowed the mixture at the home of his niece Mrs. Carl Speckmann and while his relatives called for the police ambulance walked into the yard of th& Wome and sat down on the steps to smoke a ‘cigarette.
Death of Mr. Kimmell.
. Henry S. Kimmell 79 died at Kendallville Friday afternoon death being due to an affection of the heart superinduced by apoplexy. Born in Wayne township the son of Mr. and Mrs. George L. Kimmell he was indeed a pioneer in this section. He was united in marriage to Miss Lucinda M. Rendal who preceded him in death in 1912. Surviving are four sons. . ;
Elks Home at Goshen.
At the regular meeting of Goshen lodge of Elks held Frida y evening preliminary plans for : the proposed $BO,OOO club house were submitted: for inspection by lodge members. No action was taken by the building committee. .- : ' The plans as made show a lodg2 room 54x100 feet and a gymnasium 49 feet | wide and 74 feet long running north and south. B
- May Revive Horse Racing. A plan to revive horse racing at the old Mineral Springs race course at Porter which was closed severai years ago with the aid of state troops was revealed Thursday with the an* nouncement by .Charles Crumpacker of Valparaiso owner of the track that a group of Chicago men had made an offer’ to purchase the course,

Little Reduction Expected.
Dealers predict there will be little if any reduction in coal prices for spring delivery. The cost is estimat: ed at $11.50 per ton for Pocahontas and $16.00 for Anthracite.

Samuel S. Whitehead life long resident of Elkhart county died Friday in Goshen aged 79 years. The widow and a number of children survive. { : —— ———— 4 A New Paris lumber company is building 14 houses in Goshen. The concern might extend its operations to Ligonier with profit. :

Harry Durst 27, 'Chicago former South Bend resident and Elmer Cain 32, Chicago, are in the St. Joseph county jail following a three mile chase by police officers in the west part of that city. Their arrest resulted in the confiscation of 152 quarts of alleged Kentucky whiskey bonded in 1915, one quart of red seaied wine and an automobile. :

Rev. Ira C. Boyts of the Ligonier Christian church is billed to' appear at the Cromwell Community Centec tomorrow .evening for an illustrated lecture on birds of North America. E. E. Stiner farmer dozing on his wagon while enroute for:Sturgis Friday with a load of vegetables for the market was suddenly spurred to action by flames licking up between his knees. Mr. Stiner was smoking his pipe and ashes had ignited the cargo of his cart. . :

Mary M. Caldwell daughter of Jacob and Ellisebeth Rentfrow was born Nov. 20 1850 in Elkhart county Indiana and departed this life April 21 1923 aged seventy-two years ' six n;o%hs ibt one'day. .. 1 She was married July 16 1873 to/ Joseph Caldwell to this union were born seven children one son Charles | Otis who died in infancy. - o The surviving are husbanr and six children four daughters and two sons Mrs. William Hunter of LaGrangs Mrs. Chas Shell of White Pigéon, Mich Mrs. Adrain Adair of Ligonier Mrs. Mark Kinnison of Wawaka, Charles Melvin of Ligonier and Chester Arthur of LaGrange and fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren two sisters, one brother and two half brothers. Mrs. Nooma Goudy of Marion, Mrs. George Frick of South Milford one brother William Rentfrow of White Pigeon two half brothers Andrew Heltzel of Mishawaka.
