.. That Soldier Tax Exemption. An act of the Indiana general assembly approved March 15 1919, giving civil war veterans certain tax ex‘«{ emptions was amended in the special session by a bill approved July 23,‘ 1920, to read as follows: “That seu-“ tion one of-the abnve euntitled act bel amended to read as follows: Section 1. That soldiers and sailors and their widows and orphans of the late war ‘with- Germany and of the war with Spain and of the war in the Phillippice Islands ‘aud in the rsgular ser.l2e of the United t3ates who are residonts of the ufate of Indiana shall have and are hercbv given all the rights and privileges now held and enjoyed by soldi>rs- and sailors, their widows and orphans of the late civil war.” 1 . ' ~ Much speculation has been aroused ‘over : this matter. The original tax exemption bill was introduced by Representative Hoffman of Noble county and he says soldiers and sailors reaching the age of 70 and whose personal taxes do not exceed $5,000 may take an exemption of $l,OOO. The soldier and sailors widows and orphans take the exemption under the provisions of the law at 60 year¥ of age.

Prior to this decision the Noble county land owners had paid Mr. Provines superintendent of the drain $2,000 in assessments. They brought suit to recover this amount but Judge Endicott ruled that tax ' voluntarily paid cannot be recovered.
