~ Women Make Tax Returns. Thousands of women are required to file an income tax return and pay a tax on their net income for the year 122. No official estimate can be givea of the number of such women, but statistics of income for the year 1922 No official estimate can be given of the number of "such women but statistics of income for the y&ar 1920, recently issued, show that approximate; ly 503,000 women filed. returns for that year, claiming the $l,OOO exemption allowed;a single person. The amount of net income .reported by these women was $1,264,955,727. In addition there were filed 132,181 returns by women claiming’'an exemption of $2,000 as the head of a family. “a person: who supports ‘and maintains in one household one or more individuals closely related to him (or her) by blood, marriage or adoption” Net income reported by these women for the year 1920 amounted to $3BB, 364,530. Under the revenue act now in force the personal exemption al lowed 'the head of a family is $2,500 if the net income for 1922 was $5,000 or -less, and $52,000 if the net income exceeded $5,000. ~ i

Adelaide Fairbanks daughter of the late Charles W. Fairbanks forfey vice president of the Umited States and United States senator from. Indiana was made defendant in a sui filed in federal court at Indianapolis by Charles T.,6Hanna and Thomas A Dailey lawyers asking $325,000. . |
Miss Fairbanks at the same time filed suit asking that thecontract with the lawyers be annulled on the ground she was incompetent. = - ~ The suit charges that they repre sented Miss Fairbanks in action to break the will of -her father which provided for annuity of $15,000. By a settlement it is said she received $1,452,188.80. . .

Girl is Captured.
The pretty girl domestic giving her name as Irene Gardner ~who proved to be Irene Bennett of Marion is in jail 'at South Bend to answer a charge of lstealing jewelry and raiment valued at $5,000 from the home in which she ‘was employed there. The girl was captured at Harvey, 111., and most. of her loot was recovered. She made a full confession. -

Dr. J. S. Smith, Warsaw county coroner and his son-in-law Benjamin Mitterling had a narrow escape from death or serious injury Sunday night when their automobile traveling at a rate of about 30 miles an hour struck a snow drift, one mile south of Goshen and turned completely around. Neither were injured. ,
Studio Now Open.
‘F. W. Simons of Cleveland Ohip today took possession of, and opened the . Hieber Studio and is now prepared to take care of all teh work entrusted to him. Mr. Simons has had many years experience as a photographer and will no doubt make a success of his venture. :
Ose Bowen to Remain.
~ Under present arrangements Ose Bowen will remain in charge of the local business of the Indiana & Michigan Electric company. Few changes are contemplated for the present. The friends of Mr. Bowen will be glad to hear this. shdi N
Assessors Start Work.
Today township assessors began the work of listing persorial property for taxation. Assessor G. M. Zimmerman and his deputy J. T. Latta of Perry township are on the job and will prosecute their task with vigor.
Older Boys Here.
The Older Boys conference under the auspices of the Noble county ¥ M C. A. will be held in Ligonier: March 17 and 18. A fine program is being prepared for the occasion and 200 boys are expected to be in a;ttgndanf:e.
- Fafmer is Fined. : Glen C. Smith a LaGrange county farmer arrested on a charge of violating the prohibition law was assesseed a fine of $lOO and a sentence of six months in jail. 'The jail sentence was suspended. g ,
