Income Tax Faets.

_ln the making of his income taxes return for they ear 1922, a taxpayer, if single js ailowed an’°exemption of $l.OOO. married person or head of a family; whose net income for the year 1922 was $5,000 or less is allowed an exemption of $2,500. The exemption allowed a married person or head of a family whose net income was in excess of $5,000.is $2,000. A head of a family is a peg‘soil W'ho‘act;ually_ supports one or more persons living in his or her household who are closely related to him or her by blood, mar: riage or’ adoption. L An additional credit of $4OO is allowed for each person (other than husband or wife) dependent upon the taxpayer for chief sSupport if such person is under 18 years of age ‘or in‘capable of self support because men%tally of physically defective. A single man whose net income for 1922 was was $2,000 and who supports in his home an aged mother would have no tax to pay, but would nevertheles be required to file a returm. The fact that a person’s income ‘may be non taxable by reason of the exemptions does not nyllify the requirement to file a return if his income was within the prescribed figures—sl,ooo if single and $2,000 if married. e The normal tax is 4 per cent on the first $4,000 of net income in excess of the exemptipns, and 8 per ¢ent on the lremaining flet income. The tax may be paid in full 4t the time of filing the return, or in four installments due on or before March 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15, @

Salary Cut From $3:000 to $l,OOO

The house Friday morning adoptel a majority committee report for pas sage of a bhill which would reduce the salary' of Mrs. Carina C. Warrington of Fort Wayne state probation officer from $3,000 to $l,OOO and would cur: tail the gctiviities of the probation department. This is regarded by tle state house of representatives as the first advanced step in saving money for the tax payers. = ° N :

It required the vote of the Lieutenant Governor to advance the measure ta second reading in the senate, but it will Hardly ma:ke further progress. The measure has aroused -much discussion throughout the state ‘and: is opposed by the township trustees almost to the limit. . :

Escapes With Fine.

Robert Kendell. off Fort Wayne is only 20 years! old yet he took a fly ai high finance: while ’trying’ to ‘make a million dollars out of a patent piston ring by floating a number of checks without money in the bank to redeem them. hTe result was a fine of $25-and costs by a Fort Wayne court and a sugpended sentence. The bad checks amounted to but $14.90.

. Only a few hours before the wail safe.in- the eLo Miller garage at New Haven was lotted by burglars who cbtaimed §lO4 in cash and. $lO9 in checks, nearly $2,000 had been taken from the safe and deposited in a bank according to an anmouncement made by the proprietor of the establishment.
