‘. Batt Goes to Bat. . - Declaring that the state tax board is looked upon with as much disfavo: as the Roman_ tax gatherer was by the subjugater colonies of Rome, Chas. S. Batt joint state senator from Terre Haute discussed his opinions on various state problems. : He also condemned the highway and the public service commissions and school expenditures. He said that the tax law should be: rewritten to make it practically as it was before it was changed by the Goodrich administration and the tax board ‘he given the authority it originally 'had, that of adjusting valuations only. i " Money is being spent on schools, Batt said in the form of expensive buildings and equipment under the guise of education without getting results. 4

. Chokes to Deatk on Peanut. Andrew Lenyo, five years old stepson of Jospeh Gall of South Bend was strangled to death while eating peanuts Wednesday evening. | The boy had been given peanuts by his parents and soo after was discovered to be choking. After several vain efforts to secure a doctor the police were notified and the boy was taken to a hospital .in the police ambulance. He was dead when he arrived at the institution however. e

: Plan Community Hall,' L ~ Citizens of Leesburg have provided a fund with which to construct a community building to house all civic enterprises a fair higr school basketball contests, and to provide a place for free lectures, shows and lyceum programs.. The town has less than 1,000 inhabitants but the citizens realize the importance of a community house fully as much as do the residents of Ligonier. sl |

Another Big Monopoly Approved. The Indiana Public Service commise mission has approved the §58,000,000 consolidation of electric utilities of northerni. Indiana into the Northern Indiana‘ Power company.. : All the big corporations of the state have to do is to file a’ petition and the state commission will do the rest. The big interests wil soon -control Indiana unless checked by wiping out the utilities commission. .

County Treasurer Takes Drop. " While G. W. Hoff county treasurer of LaGrange was working in the hay mow of his barn one day last week he slipped angd fell through the shoot. The treasurer found himself badly bruised but not seriously injured. He was not able to attend to his duties for several days in his office ‘at tHe court house. % : :

- Mrs. Charles McLean former resident of Ligonier and well known in thisc ity left her home in Findlay, Ohio Thursday for Cleveland wltere she is to undergo a serious surgical operation in a hospital there. She will be -joined by her sister Mrs. Evanna Smith of this city. :

Conzens 'is Progressive.

James Conzens named to fill out the unexpired term of Senator Newberry has made a record as an associate of Henry Ford and later ‘as mayor of Detroit.. He registers as a progressive republictan and is the opposite of Newberry in almost every respect. :

Big Family Dinner.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank N. Cain entertained a company of relatives at a big family dinner Thanksgiving. Those present to enjoy the feast were Mr. and Mrs. Charle§ Nelson, Mr. and Mrs. Reub Deeter and Mrs. Ellen Cain.

Entertain at Party.

Mr. and Mrs. J. A Wiley entertained Friday evening at a party the following couples in honor of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Richmond of Montpeliar, Idaho; Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Koontz, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Luckey, Mr. and Mrs. Mott Cress all of Wolf Lake.

Gets Damages and Pension,

Clyde Allen a city fireman at Fort Wayne was given $2,500 damages for injuries recveived when he fell from a ladder while fighting a fire. In addition he receives a pension of $5O a month from the fire department. He is permanently disabled. ,

Woman Booze Dealer Taken, ‘Mrs. Ma Drisbo was arrested at Ft. Wayne following the capture of an automobile with 61 quarts of whisky. Mrs. Drisbo said her home was in Montpelier, Ohfo, = . -~ i

: First Hopor For Woman, The honor of being the first wo-~ man in Allen county to administer the oath of office to a judge was accorded Miss Martha Cannaday deputy’ clerk, who swore in Judge Charles Ryan.

Trial Begins Wednesday.

The damage suit of ¢ Mrs Martha Helen Kreager of Cromwell against Dr. Aanna G. Kauffman-Kreager of Goshen for alienation of affections, has again been set for trial in the stperior court at Elkhart next Wednseday, December 6. A judgment. for $5,000 was awarded thep laintiff when the case was first tried at Elkhart several years ago. The case was carried to the appellate court where the judgment was upheld, but it was reversed when the cas was transferred to the supreme court and ‘sent back for re-trial. The plaintiff in her suit charged that the defendant had aliented the affections' of her husband, Henry Kreager who divorced his first wife and became the husband of Dr. Anna Kauffman who later divorced him. ~ Passes Lo% House. : The ship subs bill passed the lower house of congress Wednesday after a number of important amendments. It will hit. a snag in the senate unless all signs fail. The vote in' the house was 208 for to 184 against. - . :
