- Where State Taxes Go. " A table showing the distribution of state taxes from 1916 to 1922 under republican rule show enormous gains In 1916 benevolent institutions received $2,051,343 as against $3,421,136, a gain of $1,300,000 in six years. The common school fund jumped from $3,020,649 to “$4,235,5567 in the same period. In 1916 the state schools drew $1,435,931 while for 1922 they receive $2,850,948. Vocational education jjumped from $205.00 to $285.00 Up to 1920 there was no state high-' way commission but in the past three years that body has expended of state funds to say nothing of motor vehicle license funds $6,400,959. In the last two years the state war memorial has been allotted $600,000 the agricultural experiment station this year $228,075 and the teachers pension fund $114,037. ; e
Club Members Entertained.
= The club members, boys and girls of four counties were entertained at a banquet by the Kendallville fair society. Onhe hundred ten boys and girls sat down to the feast from Noble, LaGgrane, Steuben and DeKaib counties at a banquet given at the community building. An elaborate dinner was served and this was followed with short talks by Mrs. Ratts club worker: of DeKalb county:; B. V. Widney of Albion, (Claude Harper of Purdue university; James Wright of the fair association, Mr. Shank}in of Purdue university and J. C. Brunk county Y. M. C. A. secretary. A term of 10 to 21 years in the state prison or commitment to the state asylum for criminal insane for life or until cured is the penalty that Mose Stricklang 36 colored must pay for a triple assault upon members of the James Dawkins family near New. Haven, Sunday morning September 10. Stricklang was found' guilty of assault and battery with intent to commit robbery by Judge Sol A. Wood in circuit court. . B ’

Yguths Confess, Sentenced.
In _ the Elkhart -superior court Thursday morning, Henry Harman 20 and Frank Zilm 19 both. of that city were sentenced to two to 14 years imprisonment in the Jeffersonville reformatory after entering written pleas of guilty to second degree burglary. The two youths confessed to breaking into the Farley delicatessen in Elkhart a week ago and taking away a steel safe containing an amount slightly over $304. St
Cleaning Up Gary. | Judge William M. Dunn of the city court at Gary and Glax Lucas a Gary attorney were arrested by federal officials on charges of conspiracy to violate the prehibition laws. Both men were released on bond following their arraignment before the ‘United States commissioner there. Several other arrests were made at Gary bring the total humber in that district during the last few weeks A 0 8T ; Taggart to Take Stump. Announcement is made that the democratic speaking campaign in Indiana will open Monday, Sept. 25. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., assistant secretary of-the navy; will speak at Indianapolis October 3 in behalf of Albert J. Beveridge, republican nominee for senator. He will also speak in Richmond, Muncie and in Terre Haute. &

As an evidence that politics *is stronger than public sentiment- the man chosen by popular vote for postmaster at Portland ‘has been turned down and a politician recommended by the congressman in that distriet for postmaster at Portland. Bootlegger Gets Big Fine. Lloyd Nine, of three miles north of Warsaw, was fined $2OO and costs and sentenced to the penal farm for 60 days, on a charge 'of bootlegging.
