Vaccinating Sugar Cane. The wvaccination or inoculation o plants in the bitterly waged fight against their diseases will appeal as f novel idea to many who have always thought of the method in conneetion with the prevention of humaa and animal maladies only. A measure of success has attended its use by the office’ of foreign seed and plant introduetion, Washington, D. O, reports Popular Mechanics, in the evolution of a varlety of sugar cane which will be immune to the commoner formg of disease peculiar to the plant, and especially the so-called mosalc digease, which has recently rhade its ap~ pearance on the sugar plantations, Seedlings from the inoculated specimens will be tested for immunity, and if the experiment is the success It is-hoped it will be it is thought that a practically disease-proof variety of plant will be evolved. _

~ The Handwriting on the Ledger. Sir—Europe owes the . United States something like $11,000,000,000. ‘Gold is the only international money paper money or bonds being only promises to pay, and as eight-tenths of the gold of the world is stored in vaults in the United States it is evident this sum cannot be paid 'in money. 'The only alternate is to pay in commodities—raw material and manufactured goods—or to repudate the debt. Since this country cannot absorb its own manufactured goods, but is looking for foreign markets it does not appear it can absorb $11,000,000,000 worth of goods of foreign countries without disorganizing: its economic system to a much greater extent than at present. ' : It appears the final result will be that all international debts will be ultimately canceled just as Russia and Germany have canceled their mu-. tual debts. This will be a ‘hardship to the bond holders but if humanity learns the lesson that no class can enrich itself by international war but all must share its hardships and dangers including kings, kaisers, czars and working men it will be a valuable lesson costing a relatively, triviali sum, e John McD
