MILLIONS ARE " LENTEVERY DAY

Huge Advances Are Made by War Finance Corporation.

REPORT TELLS OF ACTIVITIES

More Than $80,000,000 Advanced for Live Stock and Agricultural Purposes — Export Concerns Assisted Financially to the Amount of $51,500,000—Banking and Financial In: stitutions of ‘Country Get Loans of $72,000,000. -

The War Finance corporation is doing business at the rate of several million dollars a day, according to the annual report of that organization submitted to congress. ' Up to November 30, the date of the seport, the corporation said, its adtances for agricultliral.and live stock purposes totaled more than $82,000, 000, of which the principal ittms were loans on cotton aggregating $22,000,000; on grain, $16,000,000; live stock, $13,000,000, and for general agricultural purposes, $34,000,000. : Calling attention to the fact that its jpowers for financing agricultural credit relief were not broadened until August, the corporation déclared that it had perfected its organization of credit agencies in various sections of the country.and by the latter part of October its machinery, both in Washington and in the field, was completegl. | Scores of Applications. *© “Within the last few weeks,” the report said, “the corporation has been passing upon from forty to fifty ap‘plications daily, ranging in the aggregate from one million te several million dollars.” Tare : * In addition to the agrieultural finaneing advances were reported aggregating $51,500,000 on exports, of which tlfi largest items were $28,000,000 on cotton and $11,500,000 on grain, Summarizing its loans, the corporation showed that $52,000,000 had been advanced to co-operative associations, $72,000,000 to_banking and financial institutions and $9,000,000 to exporters covering both| agricultural and export advances. e . Called upon to-deal with an emergency situation resulting from the war, the corporation declared that “consid.ering the magnitude of the task, it is felt that noteworthy results have been achieved.” e ; Entirely aside from the direct financial aid extended, the corporation asgerted it was rendering a helpful service from the psychological point of view, Body Inspires Confidence.

“Its very existencé,” the report said, “with large funds at its command, has tended to inspire confidence, has openened up .other avenues of ecredit, and has facilitated the financing of transactions through the usual channels. In many cases advances authorized by the corporation have not been consummated because the applicants strengthgned by the assurance of aid from the corporation have been able to obtain in other ways the credit facilities they required. - A “In fact, the experience of the corporation has been that wherever it has lent, or agreed to lend, a dollar it has produced confidence to such an extent that others were willing to advance many dollars, : : “The results already obsained indicate] clearly that the right methods have been adopted.. Although much remains to be done, the activities of the corporation to date have had an appreciable influence in hastening the return to normal conditions in the marketing of a{gricultural commodities, and this influence is growing as the volume of business increases, and the significance of the work of the corporation, with Ifs great resources and willingness to help, is- being brought home to the financial, industrial and sgricultural world.” g
