BEAUTIFUL HOME OF MR. AND MRS. VERNON HURSEY SUFFERS ON SOUTH CAVIN - STREET SUNDAY. , Cottage Home of Mr. and Mrs, Gor- - don Warstler, on West Third Street Damaged Saturday _ » Night. i

Ligonier was vis’ified by two disastrous fires Saturday night and Sunday causing a heavy property loss and much inconvenience to two families. ‘ Sunday afternoon fire burned the top off the Vernon Hursey fine. residence on South Cavin street entailing a loss of several thousand dollars, partially covered by insurance. Mrs. Hursey arrived home from the Lincoln Cafe, operated by her husband, about three o’clock and on going to an upstairs room to visit Dorothy - Clark heard a pecqliar crackling noise. She remarked that mice must be werking back of the ceiling, As the noise increased Mrs. Hursey became alarmed and an investigation disclosed the atic in| flames. The fire department made a quick response, but when it arrived the whole roof was in flames. Most of the furniture was removed and escaped with slight damage but the interior of the home suffered greatly from smoke and water. The fire department saved the building. The origin of the blaze is a mystery. Some think ?it caught’ from the chimney, but Mr! Hursey is of the opinion that an exposed electric wire is responsible : Owing to misdirections the fire truck was a little late in reaching the burning home of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Warstler on West Third street about ten o’clock Saturday night, but very effective work saved the building fro mdestruction. The building and furniture suffered great damage along with the family clothing. The loss is supposed to be covered by insurance. | Mr. and Mrs Warstler had put their ‘three children to bed and Mrs. Warstler had just entered the bath room when an oil heating stove, placed there to warm the apartment, exploded, and in a moment flames filled two rooms of the house. ' The children were removed to the O. C. Harsh home next door, wrapped in blankets, their clothing Leing burned. ' Mr. Warstler in trying to save the furniture suffered a burn on his face. The loss of their clothing and damage to their home is felt deeply by Mr. and Mrs. Warstler, >

MAMMOTH PETITION CALLS FOR PERMANENT IMPROVEMENT OF LINCOLN HIGHWAY

Would Have Gap Paved Between Fort- Wayne and Ligonier This : Season 7o

Fort Wayne residents are indignant. They feel that they have been slighted by the state highway commission. . Ros o | ~ Not a foot of hard surfacing have they received up to this time. o Now they are loaded with a petition containing thousand of signatures asking that the Lincoln Highway be paved from their city to Ligonier. Martin Luecke vice president of the Indiana Automobile Association is at the head of the movement and=he proimses,to enlist his organization in making a demand for the improvement. . : The Lincoln Highway is the first of the great continental highways to be taken over by the state. commission yet it has 'had slight. attention under the-last two state administrations. : Cee v Yooe Most of the state funds have been expended around - Indianapolis portion of the state. Raiis g When Archie Campbell of Kendafiville was a member of the commission he could not or did ot accomplish anything for his section of the state. Kendallville his home town, is not on jthe Lincoln Highway and he seemed. indifferent about "its ima provement. =~ : : : With the great highway paved hetween Fort Wayne-and Ligonier there will "be a hard surfaced road all the way from Fort Wayne to South Bend. Thousands of tourists will pass over the Tincoln Highway the coming summer and these travelers age entitled to consideration when it is considered that federal money enters into the imaprovement of al Istate highways.

HAS T 0 ANSWER SERIOLS CHARGE

CHARLES EDWARDS CONFINED IN COUNTY JAIL AFTER AR- = REST HERE.

Former Soldier With Wiie and Child to be Tried on Indictment Charging Most Serious : . : Offense, -

' Charles Edwards,~ who was discharged last July as a soldier of the World War, was arrested here Saturday morning by Marshal Engle on an indictment found against. him two years ago by a Noble county grand jury charging him with criminal re. lations with a girl near Wolf Lake. Edwards will answer to the plain 'charge of rape and .on conviction will no doubt have to meet a severe punishment, : & Edwards, with his wife and small child, moved to Ligonier from Wabash a few adys ago and secured employment *in a~local garage. He formerly resided in Noble county. H¢ disappeared, it is alleged, after.the indictment had been®found and before his arrest could follow. It is not known just how his whereabouts was discovered, but. the arrest was made by Marshal Engle at the request of Sheriff Black. Edwards was locked up in the city jail Saturday morning and later was taken to the Albion jail by the sheriff.

~ Edwards is but one of a half dozen or- more residents in and near Albion who have been tried for a like offense. Some of the prisoners have received sentences ranging from a fine of $5OO to time at the penal farm and state reformatory. : It is understood that Mrs. Edwards and the child are without means and are left in straightened = circunrstances by the arrest of their husband and father. Steps by the authorities will be taken to see that the woman and child do not want for provisions for the present, or until the fate or Edwards is determined by the court. ;

And He Was Bad. .

“Just be my bad boy, will you”, wrote a “love-and-kisses” friend to Clyde H. Bair, a former teller at the Federal Reserve Bank, according to evidence that won for his wife a divorce signed by Superior Judge McDonald. o Blair is now said to be in the oil business in New Orleans. His, wife Maude S. Bair, 1746 Pratt avenue, testified that she was married Dec 23, 1903, at Ligonier, Ind., and. that she had one daughter, Marion, 13 years old, and a son, Charles, 7. She accueses her husband of being friendly with a Mrs. Brink and other ‘women. She produced several letters, in one of which were the words quoted above—Chicago Journal. | Mrs. Bair will be remembered as Miss Maud Stites and formerly resided on the Stites farm at the first turn on the Lincoln Highway- south out of this city. The above news will come as a great surprise to the many ltxéieniclas of the lady ' in and around il};gonier.- s i

What We May Expect.

The Cromwell Advance in speaking of governmental affairs in Indiana says: . : : ; “In selecting candidates for joint senator and representative. be sure to see that a man is chosen who will do something to abolish the boards of graft and pap suckers at Indianapolis. This state is rotten to the core with graft and unless a change is made soon Russia will have nothing on us in bolshevism. Taxation ‘without representation is a just cause for anarchism, and was resented in 1776. American liberty and freedom are a myth, It is time for the voter to change things else in a few years we will not have a vote coming.”

l"l‘o' Improve LaGrange Goshen Road. Advice} from- the state highway commission to the LaGranger Chamber of Commerce announced the work of paving the LaGrange-Goshen road will be commenced as early as possible in May. The road is now a part of the state highway system. The road passes near the Loy road to “be improved by the county out of Ligonier. LaGrange secures this im_provement because she went after it in a foreeful maner. It seems the policy of the state highway commision is to improve roads in patch@s here .and there instead of completing one highway . beforé . beginning on another. The Lincoln Highway should have been all hard surfaced before other projects of less importance were touched. The Lincoln Highway carries morg long distance traffic than .- any road in the. state . LaGrange residenfs are to be cangratuldted on the success of their pluck and enterprise. : ; Fort . Wajyne and Allen “county seems ' to have just awakefied to what is . coming to them_ from the state highway commission and now demand that the Lincoln Highway between that city and Ligonier be improved, /
