Remodeling of Building to Commence as Soon as Charter is Received - From Indianapelis ‘

At a meeting in‘ Attorney Wigton’s office Thursday evening the directors for the Ligonier Hotel Association incorporated under the state laws for $20,000, elected the following officers for one year to complete their organization: . - President—A. B. Mier : . Vice President—C. R. Stansbary Treasurer—A. N. Wertheimer, Secretary—Sol Henoch ’ A building committee was selected of the following named gentlemen, stockholders in the association: * W. W. H. Wigton Just as soon as the necessary preliminaries are arranged the work of remodeling the Gdldsmith hotel building will begin and rushed to completion. ST Bids will soon be invited for the work. This will be done ag soon as the charter is received from the secretary of state’s office. The reconstruction .of the big building will be complete, * This means an overhauling of the whole interior of the house, providing a number of additional rooms and rooms with a bath. There will be work for carpenters masons, electricians and plumbers to say nothing of painters and decorators. ; When completed the hotel will be modern and up to date in every particular. : The hostelry will prove .of great benefit to the entire community. For Township Trustee. ‘ W. A. Jackson an officer of the Farmers Co-Operative Elevator company of this city is being urged to stand for trustee of Perry township on the democratic ticket. Owing _to . the freguent calls upon him it is the general opinion that the townshi trustee should be a resident of iLgonier and maintaigy an office accessible to all the people of the township. : ‘Mr. Jackson a retired farmer and a business man, i 1 sacquainted with the demands of the office and would prove a most acceptable officer, | . To Build Bungalow. _Hubert Loeser will begin work on his fine new bungalow on South Cavin street early in April. Mrs. Mayfield, the tenant in the old Shobe house purchased by 0. G. Bowen will not vacate until the end of the first week in April when the structure will be moved to the rear of the.lot upon a foundation being prepared for it. The building Wwill be remodeled and modernized. Mr. Loeser wil place his bungalow on the ground where: the Shobe house now stands.

Rimmel For County Treasurer '

Glenn 8. Rimmel prominent stockman of Jefferson township has announced hig candidacy for county treasurer on the democratic ticket Mr. Rimmel is proprietor of Edgewood Farm and deals in Percheron horses Duroc hogs and other stock. He receives his mail at Brimfield. ' :

Picked Up Live Wire and Died.

- Harvey Close 26 an unmarried barber of Bluffton Thursday picked up a live wire on the sidewalk of his home town and carried it to a lawn. When his feet touched the damp ground a high current of electricity _with which the wire was charged caused instant death. :

Republican Caucus Call,

The call for township caucuses to‘ selecte precinet committeemen and de Jlegates to thes tate convention by th‘ei republicans is for March 24 and 2_51 instead of May. The state convention is May 24 and 25 and the dates given in the Banner were confusing.

Meeting is Postponed,

Owing to the bad condition of the roads the meeting of the Noble County Horticultural Society scheduled for Albion had to be postponed. The few members who appeared enjoyed their dinner at the U, B. church and imediately left for home. e

Small Fire Damages Bparks from a chimney started a ‘blaze Friday on the roof of the W. A. Jackson residence near Triangular park but with little damage. Preliminary Meetings to be Held by High Schopl Students During Next

The Twelfth district elmination contest for- the selection of a high school student to represent the district at the annual state discussion league, conducted under = the . auspices of Indiana university is to be held in Fort Wayne Friday afternoon, |April 7 in the high school auditorium according to an announcement :of Benjamiin Null of the Fort Wayne high school English department and chairman of the discussion league in this district. ' Preliminary county contests for the selection of the county Trepresentatives are now being arranged by the county chairman in Steuben, Whitley DeKalb, Allen, Noble and LaGrangei counties. - | - : ; The subject that will be discussed this year is “A ‘Comprehensive Program for the Solution of the Immigration Problem” Contestants preparing for the discussion will have in addition to the material carried in current magazines and newspapers a source of information in the madterial being sent to the various high schools by Indiana university. : S The winners of the 13 district contests will be entitled to seek state honors at the meet in Bloomington, Ind.,, on April 23, where medals are to be awarded the winenrs.

Guy Hieber Improved.

Guy Hieber writing from Washington, D. C. to the Frank P. Wood family says he was able to leave a hospital and return to a dairy farm where he is taking treatment although he will return to the hospital for occasional aid. Mr. Hieber says he weighed but 75 pounds when he left the sanitarium but he is cheered by the early approach of spring. He says the season there is almost a month ahead of Indiana. Will Quit Job.

.Lawrence Lyons is to quit as head of the state highway department and a_ practical engineer and read man is to be given the job which pays to the place was purelyjHWFG666e $6,000 a year. Lyons appointment to the pace was purely political he having no special qualificating for the work. He managed Goy. MecCray’s campaign and received his appeintment in payment, . ' !

Fish Pirate Caught.

John Mack, member of an alleged gang of fish “pirates” operating out of Lafayette, was sentenced to three months at the state pemal farm to which was added fines and costs aggregating $137.40 ‘following donviction in the circuit court at Williamsport on charges of violating the fish and game laws.

Endorses Four-Power Pact.

Former Governor Samuel R. Ralston in hif opening address at Muncie in his camgaign for the democratic nomihation for U. S. senator indorsed the Kour-Power pact and arraigned the republican party for a failure to r;edeem ~their ‘campaign pledges. |

Friday evening March 31 at the M. E. church the people of iLgonier will, have an opportunity to enjoy another fine indoor eoncert by the Ligonier band. Those who were unable to hear the musical given by the band a month ago will have an opportunity to atfend the second and last .one for the geason. e i

' When the time comes for the regular weekly performances out doors, ‘the /public will enjoy thé music free of charge. : e The second benefit concert will be even finer than the first on account of the constant practice under- that eminent master George V. Roscoe, of Goshen and a program of new music. ‘The band is composed of twenty pieces and the instrumentation . will prove a most pleasing surpise. . Among the features of the program prepared for Friday evening March 81 will be the trombone in solo, the delightful effect of cornets in duet, and the xylaphone in an interesting new idea are numbers of a different style from those used in thé former concert, . i s

Celebrate Birthday Anniversary.

~ Mrs. Osie Nelson and Thomas Wagoner . Sunday celebrated the anniversaries of their birth with a party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Belts Both are 66. . | State Road Letting, April 4 the state highway commisslon will award contracts for 40 miles of hard surface paving. The Lincoln Highway mnear .Valparaiso gets five miles of it. The commission has a core drilling machine to test concrete pavement and by its use 1,128 feet of..concrete was recently condenined with a saving of $5,700 to the state. oL R

Are to Petition State Highway Commission to Take Faverable Action During Summer : Members of the Rotary Club of Kendallville have started a movement to secure the hard surfacing of the Blazed Trail or Toledo and Chicago Pike this summer, : “The experience of the past two weeks has demonstrated the need of such action and the Chamber of Commerce of Ligonier will no doubt join with the Kendallyille club membersg in the enterprise: T . The proceeding will be a strong petition ito the state thighway and Gov. McCray ‘for the improvement of this section of the state highway system. ‘ . A In speaking of the action takem in Kendallville the News Sun of that city says: “The matter was brought before the Rotary club'by Archy Campbell former chairman af the state highway commission and one of the strongest boosters for good roads in this part of the state. : “Mr. Campbell said that all of the preliminary work of surveying etc,, had been done on the road and that the government appropriation for its share of the construction was made some time ago. He said that it later had been withdrawn, as there seemed no disposition on the part of the present commission to start work, but that he knew that the government was really anxious to have this particular stretch of road completed and that he believed their appropriation 'would be made available at any time the gtate was ready to start construction work. j -“Mr. Campbell also said that according to the néwspapers the comwtmission wag letting contracts and. ‘making plans to start construction on several sections of state highway | and that he believed something should be done towards getting the governor and commission to include the Kendallville-Ligonier stretch in”this year's huilding program. “He said the great necessity for the road should be pointed out to these officials and that an endeavor should be made to get the work started, or at least to find out why a road that had been ordered in, that had been surveyed and platted and that had been allowed government aid, should be held up in building and other roads pushed ahead of it. > “The mater was discussed by other Rotarians after . which C. J. Munton acting president was authorized to appoint a committee of three to take some action.. He named Mr. Campbell chairman, and they will“Gelect a committee comprising business men and Rotarians to make the trip to Indianapolis and confer with the governor ‘and the commission.”

To Grow More. Potatoes.

~ Noble .county farmers are advised to grow more potatoes by County Agent Widney. It is claimed the grower who produces a good crop each year is the ome who wins the big profits. Potatoes in -the county are generally worth around $1 a bushel and at times as high as $4 or $5.

Afflicted With Lock Jaw.

Kenneth Vanderford a relative of Attorney Vanderford of this city was attacked with lockjaw at his home near Larwill and is being treated in a Fort Wayne hospital. The dread malady developed from a sliver wound in the hand. S

Bonds Fail to Sell,

Bonds for the improvement of the Stroh, Mongo, Topeka and Shipshewana roads in LaGrange county failed to sell March 15, the day desig-, nated for their disposal and the projects may be dropped for a year. No bidders for the bonds appeared. - - Is Winning Patronage, - The Lepird auto gervice between Ligonier and Goshen continues to win patronage. The big auto bus makes two round trips a day with a single fare of 50 cents. As the wea'ther grows warmer Mr. Lepird will no doubt have all he can do. T A —————————— ‘ 3 .~ Must Be Discouraging. . - Mayor Denning heard his first case this. morning. when Harry Lung of Syracuse was fined $lOO with a 60 days penal farm sentence for giving Louis Schnoll a drink of booze. He appealed the case to circuit court. Schnoll pleaded guilty to public in= toxication before Judge Thompson Friday and was assessed $ll fine and costs. . :

- It developed in the Schnoll case that he obtained a drink of liquor from Mr. Lung and this led to the second prosecution this morning. Lung gave bond for his appearance in cireuit court after the penal farm sentence- had been suspended. He insists upon his inocence of the offense charged. T

Oratorieal Contest.

- The oratorical contest for Noble county league schools will he held. at the 'high school building in this city Thursday evening, March 23. The subject will be “The Immingration Problem’ ’and one repregiixétative from . each of -the Kendallvile, Wawaka and Ligonier schools will participate. | The winner ‘of this contest will go to! | I'ort Wayne in April tq participate in ' the Twelfth - congressional district contest. Lloyd Tingler was -tried on a charge of public intoxication by a jury of twelve women in_the Steuben circuit court found guilty fined $lOO and sentenced to gerve thirty days.at the state penal farm.. This was the first jury of women to serve in that county and law violators will not pine. for another. e 5

State Forrester to Visit County

Charles C. Deam state forester will be in Noble county some time in June to make inspection of woodlands for the purpose of enabling farmers to take advantage of tax exemption Teatures. Mr. Deam was in this county sometime ago but was unable to com-" plete his work at that time. :

For Trustee of Elkhart Twp. John W. Zimmerman has consented to stand for trustee of Elkhart township on the. democratic ticket. Mr. Zimmerman was formerly superintendent of the Wawaka high school and is a gentleman well qualified to fill the official position he seeks. - =

Jury Fails to Agree. - The jury in the case of Mrs. Madalynne Obenchain tried in Los Angeles charged with the murder of J. Belton Kennedy reported to Judge Sidney N.
