WAS NOT ALWAYS HUMORIST
Mark Twain Mad a Really Serlous Side, Which the World s Be- . ginning to Realize, Mark Twain's reputation rests om Bis humor. He byrst upon the world 88 a writer recklessly jocund and bilariously informal. He gave the rough pioneer life of the West in his day a humerous turn that appealed to all as something different and uniqul. ~ & ‘His humor rested in large part upon carrying things to extravagant im. plications. He was quick to see and point out the irrelevant and Incon gruous. He plerced the hoax of pretension or assumption. People at - first thought of him as something of }a literary swashbuckler out of the - untamed West, and many still think of him only as a humorist. . But he is now seen in larger perspective. Through the admirable - blography of Albert Bigelow Paine and the fine tributé of Willlam Desn - Howells, the man is seen to have a weighty, serious side that promises t.ol live as long as his humor. There was much in Twain’s experience to give & serious turn to his thought. His rapid rise from obscure poverty to wealth and fame was not without its serious reverses. The honors that came to him, his friendships (with thinking men and women, his bsreavements that cut him to the heart, tended to make him look beneath the chaaces of misfortune to the springs and motives of human character and action. As a result of this ripening and broadening, Twain came to have an indubitable seriousness, says & writer in the Minneapolis Journal. The chief characteristic of his serious thought was a distrust of conventional attitudes and prevailing opinions, His stories carried him far afield into realms of art, history, language study and religion, With cynical and burning insight he indicted the zlw of Ohristian peoples whe could miake great professions and at the same time devise with Increasing ferocity deadly means of making war. All the Christian nations he saw were at the game. *And the more advanced they are the bigger and more destructive en{lnos of war they create.” ‘Howells calls Mark Twaia the Mncoln of American literature. Thm% are several parallels betweea the #wo men, Both cime from homes ef gov_grty_ and were of humble mtt oth had te make their way in f world through their own unaided :efforts and both attained pesitions W the hearts of the people. The ¢loud of seriousness and m does not hang over Twajn as or pervasively as over Limcoln. But the same rational insight that gewe lumtrowcrtoand humer ia the incengruities of life revealed to him alse the still sad music of humanity. Mark Twain as a humorist will not be valusd fess in the coming years. But Twaln as a keen observer of life and ¢ man 'with serious purposes and ideals will be more valued than he has been,
Spanish Giri's Courtship.
In the Canary isles, where rigid Spanish customs prevail, a girl @des not enjoy much freedom. In default of outdoer amusements or exercise she spends omany hours at her window gusing at whatever may be goiag on outside. ;s » To & Spanish girl the important thing about a window is that it sheuld commangd a view of a street or sqQUAre. For if any young man wishes to engage Dolores er Pepita im conversation for a couple of hours every day here is the proper recogmized place te do so. The Spanish young man will stand patiently day after day with his head at an impessible angle discoumsing with his lady love. No formal introductions need precede these window courtships, hnd it a young man finds that s giris powers of coaversation are net werthy to be eultivated for a ntqflm may discentinue his wisits wi cersemony. Sheuld they, however, result in a formal engagement, it ‘will still be many weeks befors he is admitted to the house. i

Compare First, Quality! Compare Second, Price! Buying Wall Paper its natural for the customer to inquire the price per single or double roll of paper he or she is looking at, this at times is misleadign as we know of any number of dealers that sell Wall Paper that is the side walls at extremely low prices and hook their customers on price of ceiling and borders, not quoting the price of the ceiling and border, then doubling up on what should be the right price of these two very important items. We suggest that you get the price of side wall, ceiling and bordler, then ask for the entire cost of Paper for the room or jo thben you are in a position to compare prices. But first you should know something about th 2 quality are the Papers grounded or ungrounded, are the patterns printed on Pulp Skins or on good quality hanging paper this is a very important item. Trade demands Cheaper Grades of Wall Paper hence we carry a complete line of Un-gounded Wall Paper but all printed on good heavy quality Paper. We advise using the better Grounded Papers for all rooms. - Kitchen Papers start at 15¢ the double roll, to 30c the double roll. Bed Room Papers start at 15¢ the double roll, to 50c double roll. Dining room Papers start at 15c the double roll to any price youwish to pay. Parlors, Living Rooms, Library’s and Dens at 15c a double roll if you wish it to any price you wish to pay even though it be $25.00 double roll. Bath Room Papers to 50c double roll including Varnish Papers. But the thing you should know is this—what will your room cost complete, side wall border and ceiling) We:sell Wall Paper lower than an exclusive Wall Paper- Store, cheaper than any mail order house, cheaper than any drug store, cheaper than any department store, and what is more we are here to prove the above statement. We almost forgot-the Sample Boaqk House and Paper Hanger, the above applies also to the latter two. ..We submit our entire line of Wall Paper to you under the above statement and price conditions. | The Gutelius o & 10
