Former Ligonier Resident Saffers ~ From Heart Disease In His Calis fornia Home
George G. Scovil better knwno to his} Ligonier friends as Jake, writing} from his.home in Ontario, California says he suffered six weeks of heart disease. . 'When the motor of his system began to beat at the rate of from 112 to 160 he thought it time to consult a specialist and did so with ‘the result that he gained partial relief and now his inner watch is ticking around 75, The writer says after a rather bad spell the weather at Ontario is again fine. Continuing he says: v : “Mrs. Scovil and myself attended a reunion for former Noble county residents in Los Angeles. . - 1 think there were over one hundred present. Among ‘the [Ligonierites was our old friend John Calbeck and twos ons, Mr. and Mrs., John Lowe, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stone and family Charles Morrell and family and one who wishes to be remembered to old friends back home, David Taylor. Among the guests were Mrs. Frank Zimmerman, of Ligonier, Mrs. Henry Kreager of Cromwell and others from Kendallville, Albion, Cromwell and other sections of the county. There was a big dinner and many speeches. It did us good to meet the home folks out here with the famous Ligonier smile in eividence. : . “One of the wonderful scenes enjoyed recently was the mission play at the Alhambra, San' Gabriel Mission Every visitor to California should see this play. i ‘“Citris experts claim there will be only about a half crop of lemons. Prospects for peaches and apricots are of the best, The grape crop is almost sure to be large, v . “There is much building here now. It is necessary to house the hordes coming to this the best section of the state. Of course this state like all others has its iunpleasant features, This has been a bad winter with so much cold and the smudge pots were used quite extensively at night and in fthe morning which raised quite a kick. They fill the air with smudge and it permeates the houses. The pots equipped with two or three joints of pipe and burn "crude oil. They hold from two to four gallons fof oil and burn several hours. They jare planted between the orchard trees fand it is claimed will raise the tem- | perature four degrees. The experiment this winter was not profitable as it got too cold. The exceptional rain fall this season was rather unpleasant but good for the country. However we have many interesting things, movies, all kindg of auto accidents, land slides to stop railway traffic, hold-up, murders, house breaking, all manner of stealing and everything to make this a place of jinterest. Ontario has a number of fine churches, with not a pool room nor card game in the city. The Garden of Eden and the Home of the Good. ' ¥ As ever : : i ' .. Geo. G. Scovil.,”
'} Verily, ‘verily, superior skill 'favaileth wille when the god of luck- ) §presides. : : I} The Williams’ team, after a bril‘Jliant victory the previous Wweek, I{again met its Waterloo last Tuesday evening, the Green team winning the “{first game by fifteen pins and the I second by two, a total of seventeen. |lt was a closely contested affair *Jthroughout, interspersed with the *{usual ' amusing incidents, and sev-. jeral fine scores. The first game '{found the Doctor hopelessly lost | somewhere in the wee small nineties, 'tbut got his bearings in the second, and catapulted to the near two hun{dred mark. Myron, after clipping nicely. both extreme wings of a ‘jframe, leaving the remaining eight staring at him in bold relief, disconsolately pased down the line to his Iplace of rest, muttering fervently |the-words, “Aint it a down right shame?’ There were many “splits”, |followed by the usual outbursts of | disgust—some audible, gsome emi-aud-| |ible “oh, shoot” or something nearing. {it in sound. Enjoy Great Time.
The Social Hour met with Mrs. R. K. Duke last Friday evening and despite the rain the attendance was good. Mesdames Graham Lyon, Myron Kirkland and Hugh Cole joined as hostessess, and a most enjoyable time was had. It was a mask affair, and ran the gamut from the coquettish ballet girl to something like the queen of Sheba with freaks galore. From a side-light peep one might imagine the cinema working down ‘in Hollywood on some Oriental carnival scene. And the din—well they just went by signs. : ~ Miss Elva Foote took .first prize in the spelling bee and Mrs. Galloway the booby prize. Mabel Hutchison captured the prize ag the best masked lady. She was garnished with a houquet of onions, carrots and parsley.
