Germany’s New Stamp Issues Bear Pictures of Workingmen instead of Royalty.

The substitution of figures of workingmen for crowned heads on the mew postage stamps being issued by the German government have considerable political significance, in the opinion of the Boston News Bureau. They “speak emphatically for the radical change in public opinion,” and “argue rather convincingly of a continued strengthening of democratic sentiment.” As the Boston daily explains: : The stamps are In three serles of six designs, one having the figure of a sméth, the other a miner, and the third of a farmer. The first series, with a value of 60 pfennig (dark violet) and 80 pfennig (red), show smiths of different ages at the anvil; the next in value 100 pfennig (green) and 120 pfennig. (ultramarine), show miners with pick, chisel or handcar; the last in value: 160 pfennig (orange) and 160 pfennig (blue-green), earrying farmers mowing graln and binding sheaves. The 120 pfennig stamp will be the unit for foreign postage. The 60 and 120 pfennig stamps have now been Issued. The other stamps will not be issued immediately, as the government has a supply of old stamps to be exhausted. : It is Interesting that the government takes -officlal cognizance of the depreciated mark, since the 120 pfennig stamp equals 80 cents gold, prewar parity. That a larger depreeiation is not recognized is undoubtedly due to the greater value of the mark in Germany than outside, In any case the stamps are noteworthy as indicating the passing of the crowned head as a symbol of Germany. ; ‘

in the Street Car.

. A Columbus woman in a trip on an nterurban: car recently sat behind two women who were holding an animated conversation, the Indianapolis News relafes. She pald no attention to the talk until a part of a sentence reached her ear, through the noise of the car—"in an awful fix, with both legs disjointéd.” The woman was impressed with this tale of suffering and while she was considering it another bit of the conversation was wafted to her ears over the roar of the wheels—*and one foot nearly off.” Thig was positively distressing, and the woman meved uneasily in her seat, stretching both feet to assure herself they were in proper condition. Buzz, buzz, went the voices, and then —*“a hand all mashed.” By this time the woman was having horrified visions of a mangled body. %A wreck,” she sald to herself, and to add to her horror the train made a sudden terrible jolt which sent her heart to her mouth, figuratively speaking. A smooth place in the road enabled her to hear the last of fhe gruesomg tale: “It would cost as much to send it to a doll hospital as it would to get a new one, so I'm just going to buy her a new one.” ' -3

English Food Importations.

A large part of the north of England is a busy hive of Industry, containing such manufacturing centers as Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford, Manchester, and many other places where large populations are concentrated. The north country calls for great importations of food stuffs, the bulk of which comes from this side of the Atlantic and is landed at Liverpool or carrifed on to Manchester by the ship canal. One of these imports is flour, of which in 19190 there were landed at Liverpool 869,000 sacks, and at Manchester 410,000 sacks, making a total of 1,088,000 sacks. The flour is contained in bags of 140 pounds weight each, and two bags make what Is known as a sack, which is, therefore, equal to 280 pounds. The imports .at Liverpool and Manches% were, therefore, equal to 804,840, pounds. - :

The outfit, about nine inches in diameter, is hung on a nall in the wall, A copper wire run down to the cellar or along a water or gas pipe serves as a “ground wire,” while the removal of the bulb from a nearby electric light and the insertion of a contact plug take the place of antenmae, It can be done in five minutes. : e

According to the annual report of the California.development baard, the only goat milk condensery in the world is located at Pescardero, San Mateo county, California, where a "herd of 6,000 ‘milk goats is maintgined by the Widemann goat milk laboratories. The demand for tinned milk for tuberculous patients is said to far exceed the supply, goat milk having been found & particularly valuable nutrient for consumptives. The number of milk goats in Callfornia has increased 50 per cent in the last two years.
