Ligonier’s Artificial Ice
and Cold Storage Company
Is Going to Render Real Service to the Homes of . Ligonier During this Coming Season. .
« Prominent amoxl}g« the many indusitri_es operating in Ligorier is one in which almost every citizen is personally interested in one way or the other and whose history and activity should become common knowledge - by reason of the fact that it touches intimately the life in the home of the city and has an influence on the conduct of many lines of business. < e ; - The company was organized about 3 -months ago with H. S. Pollard of this city as general manager. The present capacity of this plant will be 4,500 tons per year which will be about 1800 tons more than was used “last year in the city of Ligonier. - The present officers of sthe company besides Mr.. Pollard .are R. G. Toed of this city and Wm. Cades of Chicago. ' The manufacturing process employed by the company is a.,highly; technical one and can only be explained m a general way to the public. The plant is in cHarge of H. S. Pollard and R. G. Todd during every hour of night and day and an experienced man is in charge of operation. -
USE ANHYDROQUS AMMONIA
~ The refrigerant used in freezing this is an"hydrous Ammonia but none of this ever does or even ever can come directly in contact - with the ice or become mixed with it, for it ig contained in heavy steel pipes. If released to the open air it would immediately drive all of the occupants out of the building. The main freezing tank is of heavy steel fortyfeet long, 14ft. wide and is filled with a caliune choride brine. In this tank of brine are 130 cans of 300 pounds capacity each covered and sealed to prevent dirt or any foreign substance from entiring them while ice is freezing. The cans are filled with water pumped from sand and gravel beds, more than 60 ft under ground and which is of the same quality (by frequent tests) as “that furnished to the homes by the city. This water is softened without heating and then filtered through clean sand and gravel which process removes all lime and mineral matter which it may contain when it comes from the wells. The water is further purified by blowing air into it as it freezes which has the effect of washing the freezing surface. If by any chance there is still mineral matter inthe water it is washed to the center of the freezing block ice and before it is finally frozen solid the core or center of the block is removed by a suction hose and pure water substituted and the freezing process completed. : . g
FREE FROM DIRT
Chemical analysis by the state board of health shows a finished product to be free from bacilli or any foreign substance. injurious to health or food and satisfying the law in every resepct. The ice is known as “Raw Water Ice” and -is made by the latest and most up to date process known to science. The freezing process consitutes a transfer of heat from the water in the eans of the ‘brine in the large tank and from the brine into the ammonia which centers ‘in_the large brine cooler. Emersed in the blfle, ammonia will boil at about 28 degrees below zero, so it may readily be seen that it will draw heat from the freezing brine which is kept at about 14 degress above zero or an approximate difference in temperature of about 42 degrees. Each pound of ammonia will' absorb 500 British. Terminal Units (Heat Units) from the brine and there it is turned into a gas

* (before absorbing the heat is in liquid form) The gas is drawn from the brine cooler by a large refrigerating machine (or pump) or what is called a suction side of the machine. As it passes the suction valves into the high pressure side of the machine it is placed under a pressure of a hundred and thirty pounds and conveyed to a set of condenser pipes. These are of double constructions, small pipes inside of large ones. _ s
Ammonia gas is held in smaller pipes while water at a temperature of 52 degrees is forc“ed through large pipes and around the small ones, causing the gas to transfer its heat to the water (which is drained off to a sewer) passes back into a liquid state again and to return -to the brine; cooler only to repeat. its operation of taking heat from. the large brine tank and so on indefinitely. It will be seen from this that the ammonia is merely a servant in the process and not one of the ingredients making up the context of the ice. There are no boilers or steam plants in connection with the ice factory all machinery being driven by Fairbanks Morse Engine although there are many machines of - one sort or another in the building. It is kept - scrupulously clean. Which is not possible in steam institutions. After the ice is frozen the can containers are pulled from the freezing tank by a pneumatic crane which handles two three hundred pound units at a time ahd are dipped into a tank of pure water long enough to thaw the ice loose from the can The blocks are then lowered by gravity into a large clean storage room This room is constantly covered with ice and frost and is kept below the freezing point so that the ice is always fresh when loaded on wagons for delivery. The plant is equipped with a 200 ton capacity cold storage room. This is eonstructed of brick and cement. The ceiling, walls and floor are all insulated.” Brine tank walls and floor are insulated with pure cork imported from India. This cork,, which is made into large board. like slabs and is pressed at timeof insulation to a surface in cement and hot asphaltum, securely nailed, making tank in which no heat can penatrate even in the warmest weather. = - g The company product will always be handled with steel tongs and never with the hands. - e ~ The company will have a service truck at the plant at all times, ready for delivery day or night.. Mr. Pollard states that he never will be satisfied with the service rendered by his company unless the customer is satisfied too, and while it will never be 100 per cent perfect he beleives it will be as nearly so as it is humanly possible to make it. - Frequent failures of natural ice crops will no bearing on the ice prices with the Artifical Ice Co. in Ligonier states Mr. Pollard who adds that such shortages will not be taken advantage of to boost prices. The company according to Mr. Pollard considers its patrons -as partnérs in the business. The good will of the public will be considered a greater asset than excess profits exacted in a. time of stress. ( - The plant is now in operation and the public are cordially invited to visit and inspect the plant. . = . i ' ‘ Fred Starr will deliver our ice-and customers should buy books of him. There will “be no change after the price is fixed. o : T - H. S. Pollard ‘

Money Found in An Old Shoe.
_An old shoe used as a “first nationa al bank” some place in Anierica found its way to the foot of an Armenian refugee, with thirty -dollars in bills still packed ‘in the toe, according to R. ‘M. Davidson an ~American relief worker in the unhappy Bible Lands. The letter is made public by Indiana Near East Relief as being of interest to those who have sent shoes ‘and clothing to Armenian sufferes. “The money was found just after a man had staggered into my office and had fallen to the floor in a faint from hunger and exposure,” says the letter. “We regard the money as a special dispensation in his favor. He had walked twenty-five miles through snow for help for himself and his family. ‘“He was clad only in a torn pair of pants and an old coat ripped down the back from the collar. He had to be conveyed to the refugee barracks in an ox-cart as his feet were badly frozen that he could no longer stand ‘the pain. - : : r There came into the office during the day, twenty orphans ranging from four to fourteen in age, who walked across & snow covered mountain. There were’ twenty-one when they = started but hqnger and cold fell one enroute. They had nothing to eat during the journey and their bodies were covered with rags which any good American housewife would not uge for floor cloths,” =~ = |
Guy Heiber Writes,
Guy Hieber writing from Takoma Park Sanitorium, Washington, D. C,, to hisg sister Mrs. Regniald Dukes, says the doctor has warned him against over exertion and particulary against typewriting.” He says it will be some time before he can leave the house. “I am on a milk and cream diet, and go to bed at 8 or 8:30 and do not-arise until noon,”’ writes < Mr. Hieber. He says - he rather likes the indolence, not a care in the world. : Speaking of the big storm that visited that section he says some of the roads weresnot traveled_- for days. The storm was the worst in history. It blew a terrible gale for two days and three nights. “I get all the news in the Ligonier papers and if I do not answer letters tell my friends why. This is a quiet place—in the hills surrounded with woods”, says the writer. s
