A Wise Chioken. | : ~ln a west side school theipnplh of ‘the eighth grade were 'stuctylng about the different Presidents of the Unifed States. They had just finished Jefferson’s administration, and Miss D., the teacher, asked: : » “President Jefferson was known as what?”’ : L Harry was quick with the answer. “He was known as the Sage of the Age.” : i o e - Before the teacher could ask another question, a hand shot up and a ‘small boy asked: : ; “Miss D., what does sage mean?” ‘Harry was permitted to answer this one, too, and he said: ; “Sage means wise.” - Whereupon the small boy asked: “Well, what's a sage hen, Miss D? ~ Before she could explain, she was shocked to hear Harry, with disgust in his volce, turn to the small boy and say: - : “Why a sage hen is a wise chicken, of course.’—lndianapolis News,
A Nuisance.
Charles M. Schwab said at a dinner in Loretto: ; ' “Some men, retiring from business at fifty-five or so, take bungalows at Los Angeles and do nothing but sit on their frontsporches and listen to their arteries hardening. A bad thing. - “Others join the Atlantic City colony. There they are sure to become cranks, golf cranks, while their wives, frequenting the board walk sales in the Japanese shops, become auction eranks. Rather & nuisance, that. “I once spent the week end at an Atlantie City cottage where my host and hostess were cranks of this kind. My bedroom adjoined theirs and I got very little rest, for &1l night long the golf crank husband kept shouting in his sleep, ‘Fore!’ and instantly his auction crank wife would yell out, ‘Four and a half!" "
Killed in Kansas.
An Emporia hunter has killed a bird which seems to be a combination of duck, goose and buzz saw, belng the size of a goose, having the appearance of a small teal,” and boasting a sawtooth bill. Without doubt it is the well-known carpenter-bird which was common in the district south of Bmporia in the days of our youth. A closer inspection will reveal that it has a hammer-shaped head and nails on its toes. It saws boards with its bill for its nest and naills them together, and goes on strike during the busy geason.—Kansas City Star.
Rough on the Family.
A notorious war profiteer was talking to a group of young men on a golf club veranda. “Look at me,” the profiteer sald. “Twenty years ago a poor boy, working like a dog and today ——" He chewed violently on his cigar. “Look at me!” he repeated. “See what I've done for myself.” S The young men looked at him curiously, and then one of them said: “Your motive’s good, of course, but doesn’t your family object to your posing as a horrible example in this way ?’—London Opinion. -
