Road 17 Nearing Completion. ‘With only two more miles to be improved, which work will be .concluded within a short time, the -important transcontinental highway in northern Indiana known as State Road 17, will be transformed from a route of dips, bumps and curves into a stretch not dissimilar to a boulevard, Lawrence Lyons director of the state highway department says. : This road extends from approximately 50 miles from Ligonier through Kendallville to Butler, and as an important travel artery of the state road system is a favorite route of motorists from New York city and Cleveland through Chicago to points of interest alond the Pacific coats. For several months the departqent has engaged in rebuilding the road and surfacing.it with gravel. The minimum width is 28 feet and gravel is spread a width of 16 to 18 feet. Curves were straightened and grades eased and particular attention given to drainage the result being that two bad sections widely known by tourists as the “Butler Hole” and the “Darrow Hole” are eliminated. _ s

Bandits Work Pittsbug Road. Mrs. Earl Smith who is spending a' couple of weeks at a Diamond lake cottage received a letter from her husband who is a government engineer located in Pittsburg, Pa., in which he details an attempted hold-up by bandits on-a road running through a suburb. Three highwaymen held up an auto driver appropriated his car and all his valuables and then laid by for other victims. Among the cars to pass was one driven by Mr. Smith and he eluded the robbers only by speeding by them. Mr, and Mrs. Smith are former residents of Columbia City, and have lived ip Pittsburg some years. - :

Receives Many Chicks.

Perry Clawson Wednesday morning received 100 chicks from Cambridge, Ohio, with only one dead one in the consignment. The fowls were equally divided between Rhode Island Reis and Leghorns. Mr, Clawson has handl®d over 400 chicks thus far this summer and has demands®for that many more. ]

Garrett Home Robbed.

Burglars ransacked the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester McKennan at Garrett Saturday evening while members of the family were attending a band concert. Jewelry including a 4 diamond ring, gold watch, a wedding ring, gold meshbag and $27 in money were stolen. No clue. : E

Gov. McCray says if ‘he . calls a special sesgsion of thel egislature it is because he is compelled to. He does not desire to have the legislature on his hands. ' ;

Loses Arm in Accident.

.Clark Lowman 30, Indianapolis- man lost his right arm just below the elbow as the result of the accidental discharge of a shotgun. Lowman who is at Barbee lake with his parents, M. and Mrs. P. .. Lowman of Indianapolis, bumped the trigger of his shotgun against the side of his boat as he was entering it and the entire charge took efefct in his arm which was torn to sheds. : :

. The Laporte Herald says the United States Steel corporation has contracted to pay Walter Bunton 27 of Laporte, a machinist at the plant of the New York Blower company, $1,000,000 in cash ‘and two ‘cents a pound royalty for 17 years for exclusive use of his patented process for tempering copper.
