But 3,000,000 More Are Without . Any Assistance and Death Rate Is Growing. ,
- American contributions to the China famine fund have enabled the committee in Peking to aid about 6,000,000 persons, according to a cable message from Charles R. Crane, United States minister to China. At least 3;000,0000 more are wothout any assistance. “With the American and other contributions already received,” sald the message, “and with the help-given by the Chinese relief organizations, all agencies are now feeding scantily 6,000,000 people. Three million more are destitute and the mortality ‘will rapidly increase. . “To feed 9,000,000 till harvest time will cost, above our present funds, SS,000,000 Mexican. (The Mexican or Chinese dollar is_ worth about half an Ameriean dollar). Tifs makes no provision for future assistance to many millions n@v existing on meager funds from sale”of lands, cattle and farm implements.” : ; Appeals to the nation to help the Chinese have been made by President Harding and/ex-Presidents Wilson and Taft, and ar¢ being quoted in the campaign. = President Harding said in part: _ : ; ‘
“At this, the earllest practicable moment in my administration, I desire to add my own to the many appeals which have been issued heretofore in behalf of the starving people of a large section of China. “The picture of. China’s distress is so tragic that lam moved, therefore, to renew the appeal heretofore niade, and to express the hope that the American people will continue ‘to contribute to this humanitarian cause as generously as they possibly can.”

R ISLANDS FOUND BY SPANIARD Solomons, in the Southern Pacific, Were Discovered in 1567 by ~ Alvare de Mendana. . . The Solomon islands, in the southern Pacifie, long before Australia was discovered, were known to daring voyagers. In 1567 a famous Spanish navigator named Alvare de Mendana sailed from Peru to discover a great south continent. Three months’ cruising ‘brought him to the Solomons and Ysabel island, which he named, as his log states, “after his much-loved wife.”? i ¥
Mendana cruised for six months in the gronp, and was so impressed with the- richness and fertility of these tropic lands that he named them the Solomons,«in the hope that on his retarn his countrymen would believe they were the source from which King Solomon obtained the gold -for his great temple. This story, he thought, would encourage the colonization of the islands, and ‘he conceived the vainglorious ambition of becoming the king of a new Spain. On his return home, so brightly did he paint the prospects that he was soon able to prepare an expedition of many hundreds of settlers, -including his wife and her three brothers. In the party were also two sailors, afterward known to fame as connected with the discovery of Australia—Fernandez de Quiros and Fuis Vaes de Torres. - The expedition failed through sickness and bad management; in fact, it never reached the Solomons at all, but instead—osving to faulty navigation:—arrived at the northern islands of the New Hebrides group. Here after a few months, Mendana died, a disappointed and broken-hearted man.

Selkirk owned a tavern near Clapham, but died in 1726 at sea as a lieutenant aboard a naval vessel, :
o Washington Made Custom, .. It was Washington's cabinet that estahlished the custom for all future inaugurations to .be made in . public. He addressed a note to* his cabinet asking for thelr opinion as to whether it should be public or privaté.. The cabinet at that time was divided. Jefferson and Hamilten recommended that it should be private. Knox and Randolph reported in favor of making it public, whieh was done. :
