I'his accords with Debs's recent statenent and keeps the record clear. The Socialist Party in this country 13 a political organization, is still fa: rom ready-to accept the overlordsiiy set up at Moscow and is determined 10t to surrender to any other body th >ontrol in affairs properly coming within its powers. There is even a: iir of resentment at attempted inter ‘erence with its rights and methods ly its attitude it really throws mor: 'ight on the points of difference thar he points of agreement with the Third Internationale says the New York World. Somewhat cheering {8 the new: coming from Indianapolie that th public service commission has decided to not grant further increases to public utilities of the state. Fm two years incremses in service rate: have been granted on account of the rise in operating expenses. But now the whole trend is downward both a: to fuel and labor which enter largely into the cost of production. It is certainly time a halt was called.
The granting of the petition .of municipalities affected by the proposed raise in service rates asked h) :he Indiana & Michigan Electriec company indefinitely is but fair. It will permint of a showing at least and the probabilities are that no increase will be granted the corporation whe:) the hearing is held in South Bend I'he state commission was created t( protect the interests of the peopl ind the ‘many raises in service rate: zranted during the past two year: zave the public grounds for the Übe liet .that the commission was favor able to the service corporations. °
MIGHT PROFIT BY FORMER ERROY Young Medill McCormick, U. S 8 senator from Illinois, is making a trip through Europe to see just what th conditions are over there. He even looked in upon the assembly of th league of natione while in session, bu: had nothing to say. Perhaps th. voung man will profit by his error made during the war when he made a similar trip and reported that Lloyd Seorge, British premier asked him why Gen. Leonard Wood was kept at home and at the same time the gen:ral was suffering from a slight wound recelved near the German battle line. If Senator McCormick's trip yields information of no more value than the e referred to he might better have stopped at home. Will Be Great Instructor. At the state convention of county assessors in Indianapolis last week J. A. McLaughtin, of Noble county, was put on a committee to instruct township assessors of the state as to their ficial duties.
