Long, will the Claude E. Bowers speech made in Ligonier Monday evening, linger in the memeories of Elkhart towaship citizens fortunate enough to be of his audience. Some'lhlx one’s thoughts flew back to the @ red school house, to the history class where ihcidentally “each embryo citizen might some day achieve the presidency,” where we worshiped at the shrine of all statesmen hecause “only the good grew great.” The orator's speech made an impression. . i i y ‘1 In Hands of Recelver. | . -WHAT SCHOOLS ARE DOING Lines as Described by Banner's School Re- —— « Importance of Balance. On Friday October the eighth, Mr. Swan, a Y. M. C. A. man of Fort Wayne &ave sn interesting talk on the importance of balance.. He emphasized the importance of this word balance, how few people understood the word if it is understood at all. We know the important part balance has in the physical develppment of our bodies. It Seems strange but it has been found to be an absolute fact, that an athleto s usually below in his studies. This is because of over developed muscle, Physical strength developed, but a lack of mental development. This shows the importance of balance in all things. ; .'As is the case In a boy riding a bicycle, he must be careful to balance himself properly, If not the result is unpleasant. For instance, the sturdy foreigner, who earns his living by hard dafly toll, although his physical development is assured, he s not developed mentally. ] i |
Consclence as Mr. Swan points it out, {s merely a means of balance. It is Nature's method of keeping us balanced equally between right and
Mr. Swan empbaized the emblem of the Y. M. C. A that of a trianglc, Each angle has a meaning and the three meanings are; Spirit, Mind and Body. The Y. M. C. A. stands for the developmerit of all. The gymnastum lopment and the educational classes cussion classes for the spiritual development and the sducational classcs for the mind. Here balance s agaia brought forth, the three development equally, no over development of any one must be allowed. i
- A modern High School is a Y. M. C. A. because it teaches this three fold development and it must be bal‘anced well. . - One handicap to the physical development of boys is cigarette smoking. The effect may not be noticed at once, but eventually it will ruin his physical development. He is not only ruining his own chances of development but is also a detriment to a High School, as his influence will be cast among the other boys. Mr. Swan brought out the difference between a boy indulging in cigarettes and ono who does not. After a strenuous ball game, it takes -the former severcl minutes longer to recuperate than it does the latter. :
The “High Y” Club is using its influence to lessen the per cent of cigarette smokers in the High Schools and maintain the straight, moral, balanced line of the Y. M. C.
