poll of the county which no doubt as truly reflects the political situation as does the republican poll and the effort to stampede the votérs will be about as successful as attempts have been to interpret the Chicago platform and determine just where Senator Harding stands on the leading jssues of the campaign. In losing Munton the Noble county republicans lost a political giant and galned & political dwarf. Noble county on a presidential vote usually' goes republican by a few hundred majority, but no one can predict nor no poil show just what the result will be this year with the women voting and the issues 30 mixed. The vealy state‘moms of the youthful county chairman. must be taken with the usual iamu'un_! of salt. :
The most definite statement in Senator Harding's speech in Baltimore Monday night is this: “I'm perfectly frank to say to you that I am without a single program constructive fin character about an association of nations.” And this is about as indefinite as anything could be. The Republican candidate opposes the league of pations and says when he is elécted the first thing he’ll do ‘s “to try to find a plan for an association of natiogns behind which ail America will stand.” The league of nations of which numerous natious have become members is constructive in character. If the United Statos ought not to become a member, as Senator Harding has said, then what kind of a league should we become a mem‘ber of? . * - ’
The acts of the last special session of ‘the legislature will soon be ready tor distribution and when copies have reached all the counties of the the state the governor will issue his proclamation declaring them in foree. All acts bearing am emergency clause went into effect as soon as passed.
Wall street is betting four to one on Harding.- Four--years ago fhe same bunch of political gamblers wére offering as high as five to one on Hughes
And now it develops that national league baseball is rotten. What may be expected of politicians when ball players get croeked? : ' Just a Little While. , (Mrs. 0. W. Dowell in Kendallville) . News-Sun) - : Just a little while to frost. The golden rod is dimming theylights of its candelbra skirting the banks of the Elkhart's murmuring waters; there is not a tuft of withering grass that does not ring out the.shrill plaintive sweetness of the cricket's unwearied theme; the music of the katydid’ orchestra iz in - full chorus; leaves gloriously colored carpet- the ground, rustling softly as the wind stirs filfully overhead. “The melancholy days” will soon be here; yet also, those of radiant life and sparkling weather. -
