CHINESE ‘GODDESS OF MERCY’ Legend Popular in the Yellow Land Because It lllustrates Quality : of Filial Plety. The Chinese tell an interesting story relsting to their “Goddess of Mercy.,” who was the third daughter of the king Mias Tesong. Her two eider sis ters were married early, and whea her turn came the third refused to wearry, having already given up the tgmporal pleasures and devoted her entire devotion to preparation for the next life. The king then sent his daughter to the temple, where she was asked to draw water and cook dinper for 50 monks. But this seemed to be an easy task. for when she went to cook. she found every-

thing ready for her, a dragon belng sent from heaven to help her. The king was angered and ordered the temple to be burned but the princess spat blood iato heaven and a vew temple fell down to eurth. This

angered the king still more and he ordered his daughter killed and that

her body be eaten by the tigers. As time went on, the king was afllicted with leprosy, none of the doctors being able to cure him. A beggar monk later came #nd told the king he could cure him. Upon being given a trial the- monk said that the disease could only be cured by the ash of the burned hand and eye of a person who was on a certgin mountain.

i~ When the desired hand and eye was | finally found, the queen recognized { - them as her daughter's. The king was cured by the ashes of this hand and eyve, which made the people hopor the | name of the princess as the “Goddess | of Mercy,” far her untold sufferings rnd her filial plety to her cruel father, HAVE RULES AND OBEY THEM System That Will Do Away With a Tremendous Number of Avold : " _able Acidents. , It is economical to have rules, and 1t Is economy to obey them. ' A tremendous number of accidents result from the -breaking of rules, fometimes the rules are not laws, Inid down In black and white and enforeed by law, but they are rules, just the same. Many motor accidents come hecanse of speeding, driving on the wrong side of the road, disobeying traflic regulations in the city streets. Many accidents by pedestrians occur hecause they don't stay on the side- ' walks and when they must cross the streets they don’t do so at the crossinge. Many fires start because cans of gasoline are stored In the linen closet, when we know it should not, fwiccording to the terms of our lease, ‘be bought in large quantities, or kerosene Is used carelessly ahout a fire, !in spite of cautions from the fire department. - . - r "So it goes. Many of the ills of ‘mankind result from a disobeying of ; rules, : ' ’ This attitude in adults is much like disobedience In children—and the resulls are much the same, for punishment in some form is.'very likely to come. : Weather-Lore Wot All Fake. The vagaries of the mythical “weather clerk” are not, in the opinion of D. W. Homer, writing in' Meteorology, soo undependable as is generally supposed. He maintains that the following rules are founded on facts glihough he withholds the main fact— | to which part of .the world do they apoly : “If rain commences before daylight, it will hold up before 8 a. m.; it it begins about noon, It will continue through the afternoon; if #t commences after 9 p. m,, it will rain tiie next day; If it clears off in the night it witl rain the next day; if the. wind is from the northwest or southwest, the storm will be short; If from the northeast, it will be a hard one; If from the northwest, a cold one, and

from the southwest, a warm one., If it ceases after 12 m., It will rain next day; It It ceases before 12 m., it will be clear next day. If it begins about 5 p. m,, it will rain through the night, If ralning between 8 and 9 a. m., it will go on till noon, and if not then ceasing will go on till evening.” : _ Mental Atmosphere. = : Take time to study your own tastes, your own desires, and find out what you really react to .pleasurably, and why; then by the simple precess of selection and elimination you can imdunlly evolve the right atmosphere for your present condition. It will change as your mental life changes. But do not try to !mpose the results of your experiments on someone else, for what might rest and Inspire you, with your individual interests and amhitions, might irritate someone else heyond endurance. Because of the large part that previous association plays in the interpretation of any sense stimulus, in any attempt to create a “mental atmosphere” with patural objects, each individual becomes a law unto himself. *“Know thyself."—Exchange. - ;

All That Was Worth Seeing. ~ Whistler's amusing personal concelt is fllustrated In the following story: Meeting a friend entering a .private view at the Grosvenor galléry, the artist took him up to a full-length por trait he was exhibiting of Lady Archibald Campbell.
