FARMERS ASSOCIATION NEWS The .ear-to-row test of varieties to be run at the County Farm this year is all “line-up” now and it is going to be one of the most interesting pieces of work carried on this year. Just now County Agent Wicney has the corn in the tester. On Friday afternoon of this week he will read the test for germination and disease. Any farmer who wants to learn how to ‘detect diseased corn should be at the County Agent's office Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock and see the test opened. #o o A record of the test will be made for each ear and that with the parent ear and the corn produced by 150 grains will be displayed at the Corn Show next winter. o . .
When the clover freezes and a man doesn’t know what he is going to do for hay, soy beans will often solve the problem. Certain varieties mato eplendid hay if planted about the ssme time as corn. :
The clover failure can be worked up, the beans sown broadcast with the grain drill and the rich hay harvested in August. Soy beans are producing good crops for men who know how to raise them. Those who don’t should consult their County Agent before going ahead. ‘.
Trees sprayed while in full bloom will be damaged more or less -so far as the set of fruit is concerned. Big orchardists are very anxious that nothing damages .the pollinization which goes on at this timo.
Spraying at blooming time iz likely to kill thousands of bees which are so important in getting a good set of fruit. The first spray should be made just before the buds burst into bloom and next one when the petals are falling to the ground. . County Agent Widney offers the following suggestions regarding this spray for apples: The most important summer spray is the one following the drop of the petals. This spray can be put on when 4-6 of the bloom has dropped, never while the trees are in full bloom. ° :
Codling moth, curculio and apple scab are the three main reasons for this spray. Don’t fail to get it on even of the wind is blowing. 35 ft. of hose, a 6to 10 ft. spray rod with a 46 degree angle nozzle will greatly simplify the spraying operation at all times materials use 1% pounds of powderel arsenate of lead and 1% gallonp of liquid lime sulphur to each 50 gallons of spray. (Use 4 and 5 pounds of dry sulphur to 50 gallon of spray.
