Persons with an extended acquaintance in Kosciusko county insist there is no good repson offered for the empty jall at Warsaw. "The city of Elkhart is putting on Chicago airs. A citizen was stuck up on the street the other evening and relieved of his valuabes at the point of a gun.
Virginia republicans instructed their four delegates at larg for Gov. Lowden for president. If public sentiment there is anything similar to that prevailing in Indians the selection must hove cost a heap. A
Now friends of other candidates threaten to start an investigation to learn where the millons are coning from to finance the Gen. Wood preliminary campaign. That Gen. Wood has a well organized political army in twenty-six states no one will deny.
Evidently Gov. Goodrich is having a fine time in Florida. But who is doing the governor’s work in his absence? It is quite certain that one Bush is not.—Columbia City Post. When President Wilson went to the peace conference on a most important mission the republican press found much fault because of his absence. Goodrich is in the south on a pleasure jaunt and none of the newspapers seem to be finding fault. '
The republicans will not make much of a stir for compulsory military training until after the election. After opposing the peace treaty and the league covenant to promote peace, the republicans must to be consistent declare for a large army and navy and if necessary force the youths of the nation into training for war. The war profiteers and munition makers all opposed the ratification of the peace treaty with the league of nations feature. The adoption of Article 10 of the league covenant without amend‘'ment would have prevented the United ‘States from making war on Mexico l‘ghere'th‘e Hearsts and his ilk have great financial fnterests on an inse}cure footings ~ : ; Liberty Bonds Found. i Liberty and other bonds valued at $lOO,OOO were discoverd in a water soaked gunny sack, which was dug up from a pig sty on the farm of Guy Wadsworth, af former policeman, of Dalton, 111. Dectectives from State's Attorney Hoyne's office in Chicago, who were seeking evidence against Wadsworth held as the head of a band of thieves made the discovery. Forty pounds of explosives and many safeblower's tools were unearthed in the tarm previously. The loot is believed to have been taken principallly in Indiana, where eight.or ten robberies have been attributed to the operation of Wadsworth and his men. It was thought the bonds might have been stolen from the Gandy bank at Churubusco. . i
Some Ancient History. : KENDALLVILLE, Ind., March 233 —The safe belonging to the estatz of John Gappinger, which has been stored in one of the Gappinger buildings here, had not been opened for 28 vears, and yesterday Charles Crawford N. Y. C. section foreman, brought a gang of men with him who wielded sledge hammers until the safe was broken. - The contents of the safe were investigated with interest. Among other articles found were the passports of Mr. Gappinger, who left Germany in 18560 because he was against militarism. ' Another document shows that he was a graduate of a school of tannery. Coming down to a later date one instrument shows the sale of 9,000 feet of lumber from his farm near Cosperville, that brought only $26. The stumps from these black walnut trees are now being dug up and sold for 'more money than the trees originally 'sold for. H e came:-to Kendallville in 1860, and hauled his wheat to a mill at Fort Wayné to get flour. | RS - Wateh the Photograph. During recent months so much trouble has ben experienced by the railroads of the country with counterfeit money that the officials of some of these roads are taking every step possible to check the increase in number of bills passed on railroad employes and are also aiding the government in an attempt to locate the railroad empolyes bulletins have been ‘published and are being placed in all ticket offices and freight stations where money is received and paid out for the purpose 'of making the employes familiar with the inscription on each bill. Federal reserve and federal reserve bank notes of all issues bear the following portraits: §l, Wash ington; $3, Jefferson; $5 Lincoln, $l9, Jackson; ' s2o,Cleveland; $5O, Grant; $lOO, Franklin. Therfore if a railroad employe is handed a $lO federal reserve note with a protrait of Washington on it he knows without a doubt to $lO. This information is also valuable to the genmeral public making Ht
