Published by W. C. B. HARRISON Editer athePostofice st Lige r, lad.. v second W ‘ LETTER FROM CUBA Ashton Sedgwick Writes Entertalningly of His Pleasant Sejourn on the Island Ashton Sedgwick the well known Ligonier resident, says in a letter to the Banner that the most unpleasant feature of Cuba is its ineflicient mail service. He experiences great dificulty in securing his copy of the Banner. He writes: : -
“We had rather a rough passage on the boat with much sea sickness but did not miss a meal. In landing In Havana we found a strike of rallway employees which lald us up a week.
Thec ity seemed full of Americans and it looked strange to seé saloons running wide open. Our first stop after leaving Havana was Santa Clara ‘where we found a fairly good tavern ‘but the meals did not compare to those served by Doc Bailey. That food pre‘pared under the supervision of Mrs. Bailey would certainly look good to “me. After a couple of more stops we landed in Palm City after a drive on & road cut through the jungle. Thc weather is wonderful. Glorious sunshine and gorgeous sunsets. A delightful breeze blows most of the time and the nights just cool enough to invite sleep and rest. There is no sale here for the wonderful grape fruit raised and wagon loads are dumped into the woods. Oranges are given to all who care to pick them. 1 rather overdid the thing at first, picking and eating the ripe fruit from the trees and now they have lost their relish. : “Palm City has a population of about 100 souls. There are three stores selling dry goods, groceries and booze. We spent a week in LaGloria, an American colony, and ideal place for a winter rest. “Remember me to my friends. : s : Ashton Sedgwick” ' - OFF FOR ALBION Great Gathering of Democrats For Love Feast and Banquet Today
~ Today many democrats of Noble ‘county will visit Albion for the love feast. The banquet will be held in the Opera House at one o'clock this ‘afternoon. It is not known just who the speakers will be but there will be plenty of oratory. Perry township and Ligonier will turn out in force if the weather is favorable. . | — ' The Pessimist. - Editor Downey of Churubusco Truth heard the wail of a pessimist the other day and went straightway to his den ‘and penned the following: ~ "The dog sat in the midnight chill and howled at the beaming moon; his music edge was strictly nil, and voice was out of tune: And he howled and howled as the hours went by while dodging the bricks we threw, till the moon was low in the western sky and his voice was split in two. And there wasn't a thing at which to howl, over which the fool pup should weep, and the course of the dog was wrong and the people were wild to sleep. There are plenty of men like that foolish hound who weep when there's nothing - wrong— disturbing the country with senseless sound— the kicker's doeeful song.”
Great Orator Here. The great prohibition orator Hon. J. G. Camp, with a national reputation will appear at the Presbyterian churecn in this city Thursday evening. The subject of the lecture will be “Uncle Sam's Relations to the New World Conditions.” All are invited to hear this masterly presentation of a great absorbing topic. The meeting is not a Presbyterian affair but one for the whole community. Home Special Train. The Home Special Train sent out from -Purdue university will reach Ligonier March 26 at 7 o’clock p. m and will remain until 9:30. The train is composed of five coaches. Running water in the home will be demonstrated in one of the coaches. The exhibits will be of greatest interest to the farmer and his family. : Flood of 01l Stocks. The Banner received three propositions offering oil stock for sale in one mail Saturday.. No doubt others .re-| ceived like propositions. It is unsafe to invest in such stocks as a general principle and before buying it is well to consult your banker.
