ANONYMOUSFIGHT ON LEAGUE ‘Who is inspiring and financing the clrculation ef anonymous letters and circulars against the .league of nations? asks the Geoshen Democrat. Large quantities of this hostile litera ture are streaming into homes, shops and joffices. It takes the ferm of a patrotic appeal to the recipent; it masquerades as a movement ‘'to pre serve American rights andtraditions;” it quotes: scripture, histery and re public an orasigns; 1t proclaims a “holy war”' against President Wilson and the demecratic party. . Why should persons so full of love ef eountry be so mysterious—or modest? If these patriots are incurring so mueh expense to save their natiye land, why shouldn’t they have the credit fer their noble undertaking? Why Temaln anonymous when their fellew citizens would welcome knowledge of jtheir identity? The subtle suggestion im all these letters and pamphlets im that President Wilson is wrong im adyecating and the republican leaders are right in opposimg the league eof natioms. They are clearly designed as propaganda for republican voses. Thei! purpose indicates “their authorship. They are anonymous evidently beeause it is regarded - as unsafe to impose on republican leaders the respon: sibility for this manner of bush¥acking. - ’ :
If;this. method of atsack on the league should suceeed—but there is no likelihood of that—repyblicans would be the gainers If it fails, they could-escape the odium of having resorted to the meanest of all weapon —an anonyrnaous letter. :
- The only objeet the repuablicans have for eppesing a league of nations is a party reason. Because the president of the United States happens to be a democrat and favors the league the republican bosses fear some advantage mizht inure to the demeocrats with the adoption 0! the lea‘go covenan. It matter: little =to republican Senators how leng peace is delayed of shey can serve their sordid interests. 1t would be interesting to learn what is to be gained for the people of the Uuited States by the failure. to ratiry the peace terms decided upon by the great powers. What substitute has the opposing semators $0 advance for the league covenant? .
““Hunish heunds of hell” is the way chairman Will Hayes of the natienal republican committee referred te the Germans in his :Fert Wayne speech. Considering what the Germans of Allen County did for the party of Mr. Hayes in the late election his referemce seems almost ungrateful. e G
Wil the d¢steemed .gditor of the Ligonier Leader tell. his readers why he epposes the league of nations? His answer will probably suffice for all opponents of the league. . =
