_ Must Raise Wheat ] Early plowing will produce from two to ten bushels more wheat per’ acre than late plowing, besides helping getrid of the joint worm which has cut Indian’s wheat production this year-according to an expert of Purdue. : 3 | Breaking the ground as soon as possible after the crop has been removed puts the soil in shape to absorb every shower, makes a firm, moist seed bed and keeps the weeds down so that moisture and available plant food can accumuiate in sufficient quantity to give the wheat a quick, vigorous start as soon as planted. . ' Dragging or harrowing of the ground wlthin a half day or day after it is plowed saves moisture, labor and time and helps put down the weeds helps wipe out the joint worm and Hessian flies, two noted wheat enem ies, kill volunteer wheat on which these pests feed, and also help retain the moisture.

Lafayette, Ind., July—Experiments have been undertaken by the entomology department of Purdue University to show effect on bees of tree sprays applied at blossoming time to control various insects. The first step of the experiments, which are to extend over a two years period, have been completed and indicate that the bees may be killed by this spray which should be applied shortly after the blossoms have fallen intead of while they are on the tree. It was found by analyzing dead bees and also by feeding live ones until they died that 1t requires only .0000005 (five, ten millionths)of a gram of arsenic to end a bee’s career.

WHO STARTED THE WAR?

“Who started the war?”’ the Crown ; Prince asked, And the Kaiser cleared his thioat, “Listen, son, and I'll prove to you That Germany's béen the goat,

“England started this cruel war, Of that there is no doubt, After solemnly promising our faithfu spies ' ; She surely would keep out.”

‘‘Nay, nay, father, can the bunk, No need to lie to.me, } Tell that tale to the peasant folk, But I'm wise, den’'t you see.”

“Perfidious Belgium was the cause, We made them rue the day They opposed our valiant troops _ And disputed our right of way.

““We punished them for their insolence But we failed to conguer Irance; Belgium must pay in blood and tears For opposing our advance.””

**Come again,”’ the Crown Prince said As he lit a cigarette, “You tell it well, my honored sire, But it’s the truth I want to get.”

“Well, Russia started this crue! war The Cossacks did the trick Despite the dear Czarina - And her husband, Cousin Nick.

““They told me I could go ahead For Russia was my friend | Ach Gott, why they did deceive 1 cannot comprehend.”’ -

“Try again,” the Crown Prince said **You've told that tale before, It might go great up in Berlin, But I need something more.”’

‘““Then France is guilty,” the Kaiser said, ' ‘“They started it for gain, And we defended the Fatherland, And Alsace and Lorraine.””

‘‘Knough of this_ lies, all lies, You’ve got Munchausen beat, Now tell the truth about the war " You know I am discreet.””

‘““Well, son, do you remember A few short years ago, When Roosevelt came oyer here To the military show? =

‘‘He watched the grand manuvers Of our troops upon the field, He cried aloud ‘lt’s Bully, ' And the foe would surely yield.’

‘““He clapped his foul plebian handUpon my royal back, : And shouted, ‘Bill, in soldier work, You surely have the knack.’

““You simply are unbeatable, Why, with these forces hurled Against the troops of Christendom, You’d surely lick the world.’

‘““There you have the inside facts, And Oh, I’ve often grieved O’er these words of Theodore That I, dam fool, believed.”’

The Kaiser stroked his withered arm And swabbed his running ear, The Crown Prince droppod his cigarette » : And wiped away a tear.

“*Oh, Theodore, Oh, Theodore. Your name we both abhor, Your bum steer got us into this, - You started this dam war.

Teaching ’Em to Shoot

Indiana has about 200 companies of civilian® soldiers known as Liberty Guards. A new service has been " assigned to them. They are asked to "instruct young men registered for the selective draft awaiting call. Gen. Crowder wants the men selected by the government to enter the cervice “willing, loyal, inteiligent, ciean and sober.”” The boards of instruction have been asked to get acquainted with the registrants in class 1 and help them to understand why we are at war, what we are fighting for and how they can best prepare themselves for effective service. It is believed that the Liberty Guards already in military training can be a great help to the boards of instruction by taking hold of the prospective soldiers and giving thiem useful information and patriovic pep. , _ |

Some Peculiar Figures

'| In discussing conditions incident to the conduct of the Noble county Farmers Mutual Insurance companies R. J. Stewait, secretary noted some interesting facts today. The losses so far this year have been greater than for the corresponding pericd last year and are as follows: In class A, $8,200; class B, $3,800; in the ecyclone class, $7,500. There has not been a single building loss .by lightning but much more live stock losses have been mostly cattle in pasture fields. The buildings burned have been both from incendiary or accidental origin—more of the former than usual. ! . Removed to Warsaw ' E.. W. Reiber, the well known blacksmith, has purchased a motion picture house in Warsaw and moved his household goods to that city Wednesday, 'The goods were taken over in the Starr auto trucks.
