Many Republicans of Indiana are wondering why the two Senators, New and Watson, were so strong in their opposition to the bill authorizing the President to take over the telegraph systems if he ‘deemed it necessary. They opposed it most vigorously in face of the fact that it was asked as a war measure by Secretary Daniels and Secretary Baker and that only four Republicans of the 212 in the House showed the least oppositions. No Republican congressman of any note opposed it. Following the Senators, vote on this subject the Republican state organ, the News, has been equally yigorous in its opposition and keeps up the criticism from day today. 1t seems that the Republican congressmen and the senatcrs from Indiana are not in harmony on many war measures.

Another incident that brought smiles from politcal observers was the vote of the two Indiana senators on the dry amendment to the agrieultural bill. In a question of order that would have killed the bill if it had been sustained both Watson and New voted to Kkiil it. Not long ago both voted for,the dry amendment to the constitution, so that now these statesmen have a good record on both sides of the fence. If they are in a dry community they can point with pride to their dry vote and if they are in a wet community they can point with equal pride to their wet vote. The question now :arises, are our Senators straddling statesmen?

You Must Register

The registration board will be in Ligenier July 26 to 31 inclusive for the registration of voters. All persons must register or they will not be qualified to vote at the fall election in November. The board will hold its sessions in city hali and will be on duty in the evening. There is no expense attached to the registration for the voter. :

Three men have enlisted for army training ;at Valpariso. They are Elba Collins, Lamar E. Hussey and William Clawson. For training at Indianapolis, Harry Bassett, while for Purdue Oscar A. Diehm and Fred Tschabold have been registered.

John Isenbarger, a prominent real estate dealer of North Manchester and president of the State Board of Agriculture, was in the city Saturday on business. Mr. Isenbarger says there is to be an eight day fair this year. ; e
