ONBASEBALLMAP? H Anxious ‘‘Fans' l"fl'c,‘:;::im'fihg' tf) Feel. Anxiety, bßut A Biggs Says He Will : Not Be Magnate.
There is considerable doubt whether Ligonier will have a professional baseball ‘team: this summer or not. .
. The doubt is injected into the matter by Art Biggs, who, not having had a chance to train down South this spring and not‘being in the proper baseball atmosphere, feels pessimistic -about the whole thing. That isn’t saying that Art is not a real, thirty-second degree “‘Fan’ because, as a matter of fact, he has an ability already for the fellow who insinuates that he has lost his interest in the'game, =~ . The whole troub® is that Art- nas tost all desire to be a baseball magnate and carry .the honors and the payroll of the team on has own shoulders. He Mo
The result is that Ligonier seems likely to go without a teain this summer because ‘‘the man behind the gun’’ pines to sit in the, grandstand and be just a plain ‘fan’’ and “bawl out' the ball players for bad plays just as any good “fan’’ has a right to do, rather than worry over the ghte receipts and explain to other disgruntled “fans’’ why-he team don't do any better work. . 5 Mr. Biggs thinks somebody else ought to share the Jjoysof managership with him and in order to create general interest in the game, he will cheerfully subscribe $25 to' back the team, but manage it? WILL GENTER FIGHT OFWHOLE GOUNTRY IN INDIANA IN 1914
Politicians Look On Visit of President and Vice -Presi~dent to Hoosierdom As Indicating Unusual In- ~ . ferest in . the local - Situation. - Chairman Korbly of the Demoecratic| state committee- expects to inviter President Wilson and Vice President: Marshall to take partin the campaign in Indiana.- He Wwill extend an invitation to them as soon as .congress ad-+ journs.’/ Recently, there has been a repart from "\Vushing.ton that the president will make a number of campaign speeches this year. If he goes on.the stump, Chairman Korbly and other feaders will urge him. strongly to come to Indiana. This state will ‘again be a big poitical battie ground, as Beveridge is determined to make a hard fight against the president and his policies. Probably there will be no state in the-country in which there will be a harder tight made on the democratic national administration than in Indiana as the republicans as well as the bull moosers intend to go after the new Wilson tariff and currency bills. -Beveridge also is at variance with the president on the free tolls bill. He is against the repeal of the law exempting American vessels engaged in coastwide trade from paying tolls. - :
~ Therefore it wiil be apparant that ‘there will be good reason why the president should come to Indiana to deliver addresses, * Of course it is not likely that he .will make many speechies, but Chairmad Korbly hopes to land him for at least two or three speeches for this state. It is recalled ‘that at the close of the 1912 campaign president Wilson speke to one of the largest audiences he ever addressed when he arrived here, The crowd was one of the greatest in the history of the state.’ The vice president has proved a popular campaigner in Indiana and it is expecteé} that he will make a numbar of speéches in this state. All of the members of congress would like to have Lim for at least one speech in Indiana. : ~ Senator Shively. as a matter of course will be -the principal speaker. in Indiana and as soon as congress adjourns he will come here to confer with Chairman Korbly regarding his itinerary. By that time the republicans and bull moosers will have adopted their platforms and it will be apparant how the issuesare to be drawn. ~ Chairman Korbly is getting some very satisfactory reports fron’ every district, showing that the democrats are in very good shape. One of the striking featuresof the situation is that whenever the democrats hold a convention this year thé attendance is the largest in the history of the party.
FOLLOW GERBER'S FIGURES The RANNER desiresto call attention to 4 mistake in {igures in the report make by Manager Day of the Mutual Life Insurance Co. ' Insomuchi that the figures were in the billions of dollars, the -editor may be pardoned for not knowing much about them. The fact is that while the editor of this gleam of sunshine ‘is perfectly composed in the present of a mere, million, he js totally unfamiliar with such stupendous figures as those furnished by KFrank Gerber. He has seen an array of tigures that were said to represeht a billion and he never expected’ to see anything bigger, so when Gerber casuelly dumped the Mutual's figures on the editorial desk, every body in the Banner oftice began to grope and wonder what they meant. s Anyhow, Gerber says the report read ‘‘Billions of dollars” instead of mere millions, but. either wowd be satisfactory for our purposes.
