Wtile at work in the Kendalville vards about his engine, Lake Shore Engineer Charles Click of Elkhart, was badly scalded when his fireman accidentally opened a blowecock, catching the engineer broadside. He was taken to Elkhart om No 15 the train making a special stop at that place for the purpose. ; .

Mrs. Sarah A, Barcus died Satarday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jacob Long, a mile norinh of Etna, aged 77. Mrs. Barcus fell last February and broke her hip and nas been an invalid ever since.

A McDonald Groves of Fort Wayne 18 now at the head of the LaGrange Democrat. He has considerably improved the paper. The Democrats and the peopie generally over there should give him deserved support. : :

Senator Beveridge - has recommended the reappointment of &va M. Kauffman as postmaster at Topeka, Isagrange county. On the firsr of last January the Topeka postofflce was raised to the third class. She has held the office for several years.

The Noble county teachers institute will be held during the wéek of August 29 to September 2. The Lagrange, Dekalb. Allen, Elkhart and Stenben counnty institutes will be held the same week. Whitley connty will hold its institute Septemberd 9.

* Mrs. Eliza E. Hersh was buried at Aville last Thursday. She was the gister of Mrs. J. B. Stoll and for a number of vears resided at this ecity with Mrs. Stoll, where she was married to L. H. Hersh in 1869. They bad resided in Avilla over forty Vears. . :

Dr.J. W. Morr, Nobls county health officer, reports twenty births and fourteen deaths during the month of June. The list of contagious diseases are; Diptheria,2; scarlet fever. 1; measles, 46; whooping congh, 5 searlet fever, 2; tuberculosis, 4. All of which developed during the month.

Roy Herron. a printer who recently came here from Gorhen to accept a position with Mr. Thompson, got his left hand badly mangled Saturdav while operating a job press. The injury was a frightful one and will maim the hand permanently. Mr, Herron has the sympathy of everybody. _ :

The King Military band is at Lake Wawasee for the week. They are nicely located at Jones Landing where they are ‘‘roughing it” and havipg a good time. The boys came over to Natticro Beach Tuesday afternoon where they serenaded the Ligonier colony, playing several excellent selections. :

As predicted Jas. S. Drake of Goshen, was nominated last Thursday as the republican candidate for judge ir the Elkbart: La Grange cirenit. The resnlt of the primaries in Elkhart county was so favorable to Drake that Hon. Lou W. Vail did not allow his name to be presented of the convention. 8. W.Ganiard of La Grange was nomiuated for Proseeutor. ;

The Hon. Cyrus Cline of Angola spent Frtday and Saturday in the city looking after business affairs. Since his return from Washington Mr. Cline has visited every eounty in the district of his candidacy for re-election to congress. ‘‘Fromevery side comes demnoncratic encouragement.’’ said Mr. Cline. and my prediction after a careful study of the situationis that the party 'will poll the bigest vote this fall in the history of the district.”’ —Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.

Anytime that the promoters of the La Grange corn sshool have not got their nerve along with them some one in the part- has over looked it. They have been trying to get Roosevelt a 8 the big gun for their show but he has declined 'so often that the managers have given up the task. Over 800 tickets were sold for the moraning trains to Goshen yesterday. Mapy others followed on the later trains. It is safe toestimate that at least 500 people froni this vicinity went to see the bigshow. S

C. S. Knecht accompanied by his daughter. Mrs. G. ¥. Thompson came here last Friday ior a visit of several days with his son,Calvin Kne:ht and wife. Mr Knecht has been a great sufferer for many years with rheumatism. ]

A New York aunthority in reviewing the past theatrical season lists “The dollar Princess,, and ‘‘'l'he Arcadians,”’ as the best musical shows, both of them being unusually good; *The Fortune Telier,”” as the best comedy, and **Madam X’ as the best drama. .

Bert Fualler of Wolf Lake and C.A. Whittle of (Goshen have purchased the Babcock restaurant and Mr. Fal ler is already in charge having taken possesion last Tuesday morning Mr. Fuller has had considerable experience and will doubtless keep the Empire up to the high standard maintained by Mr. Babcock.

Several of the local visitors to Goshen Taesday report losses from .pick pockets. One well known York Township farmer admitted that he contributed ten dollars to the experience fund. The best part of the story is that he made his wife turno her money over to him for safe keeping as she might lose it..

A high ciass Vaudeville entertainment will be given at The Inn, Lake Wawasee tomorrow (Friday) evening. A company of artists from Chisago will put on the show and they are all good people. .The program provides for an evenings enjoymeunt and doubtless many of our people will take this opportunity to visit The Inn. :

Not one alone is the cost of living on the upward hike Automobile tires have increased 20 per cent in price during the 'last few months. As every boost in the cost of rubber goods is sooner or later left by the ultimate consumer, then the poor man’s only hope is to stop buying automobiles and purchase aeroplanes.

The La Grange base ball fans are inthe dumps. The warm rivalry between the Kendallville and La Grange clebs has been settled and Kendallville has cinched the honors. Last Sunday the-concluding game of the series was played at Kendallville where the home team won by a score of sto 2. ° Two thousand people sawthe game.

Jacob Straus came home from the east last Thursday morning after a pleasant visit of several weeks with his daughter, Mrs. D. Winegarten and family who are spending the summer at their sea shore home on Long Island. Mr. Straus is in excellent health and made the trip without any trouble not withstanding his_advanced age. .

Roy D. Keehn came down from Chicago last Thursday evening to attend the meeting of the Northern Indiana Editorial association at The Inn, Lake Wawasee where he was one of the speakers at the banquet. He could not leave Chicago in time t> get tnere over the B & O and.in consequence was compelled to come here and make the trip overland. bfi:‘. Keehn has recently been mixed up in an endeavor to reconcile the democratic factionsin Chicago and has taken a prominent part in the conferance of party leaders.

Young people who will attend gchool this fall should write the South Bend Buyginess College for its new illustrated Catalog, which will be sent free to any one requesting it. The Ligonier ball team went to Cromwell last Sunday where they were dafeated in an interesting game. The score was 5o 2. The locals put up a good game but had one of their unlucky streaks.

The barn belonging to Charles Ingerman, residing southeast of Avilla was struck by lightniug Sunday night, and was burned tothe grouud together with tour head of cattle, some wheat and hay inside the barn, and a wheat stack nearby.

Rabbi Harry W. KEtelson, for the past BiX years at the head of Acduth Veshalm congregation in Fort Wayne, will leave that city in September. He has accepted a call to Temple Beth-Israel, the largest and oldest Jewish congregation in Hartford, Conn.

Mre. Nathan Simon and her prettv little daughter, came here last Monday from Mobile Ala. They were accompanied by Mrs. Simou’s mother, Mrs. Leo Solomon who has been in the south for several monthe, Bothof the ladies w:zre glad to get back to tueir old hume where they have many friends.
