Elkhart is to boom. The Lake Shore will spend $3,000,000 in making permanent improvements in that city during the next two years. An immense locomotive works will be built first. In addition to the locomotive works the company anpnounces it will also build freight car shops employing as many men as in the locomotive works.
The Kendallville city council has asked for figures relating to the cost of installation of our new park nys-i tem of ‘street lighting. It was expected that our sister city would| soon awaken to the fact that L'g-I onier had again beaten them to something up-to-date and attractive. Kendallville has always followed Ligonier. They saw our waterworks system and liked it 8o well that they got one too. They admired our electric lights and followed sait. They tried our pavement and soon after profited by our experiment. They saw our library and tried to get one like it but the projeet is stiill in the air. As soon as their town got big enough they got an Elks’ lodge ane now they want street lights like Ligonier. If you want to see the best, moet up-to-date, city of them all, come first to Ligonier, and then go home and spruce up. |

When the talk of installing the new system of strest lights for Cavin street was first begun, some of our very conservative citizens got the idea that the new lights would cost several times as much as the old method and at once raised a howl about the proposed extravagence. The declaration was made that the new fangled arrangement would bankrupt the city. The city council was almost overwhelmed with objections but a careful estiate having been made by councilman Banta and other members of the body, the new lights were purchased and installed. The good sense of the council is best evidenced during the- last two months under the new system. It is now found that the city will either have to put on more or larger lamps or burn them all duriog the night or they will not nse the current to their ecredit. In other words the lights are not as cxpensive as the five are lights displaced under the old contract. :
