Hotel Man Provides Carnations for Guests in Memory of His -Dead Daughter.

The “wolltitions of jdols” iv i explained as "meats offvred to Wois” {v. 28), came to be & sore troubie in the church, and liberty to eat such meat (the meatl commonly gold bad nearty all formed part of sacrifices) was at A later time claimed for Chris sians very strenuously by Paul But until the Gentiie churches were con. firmed in their new separation frosi idolatry, it was wise to require them to abstain from whatever might tempt them with memories of the licentious revels which heathenism celebrated in the name of religion. . 2. “Forpleation,” however, was the great sin of idolatry, which “glorified sexual vice with the halo of a sscred ‘sanction "—~Bchafl. Courtezans were the priestesses of the temples of Ve nus, and crowds of abandoned women gathered around most of these so called holy shrines. To this day, sexual, immorality is the terrible sin of idolatry, as the missionary annals of Africa, Indila, China. Japan and the South seas most abundantly show, 3.. “Things strangled,” meant “the flesh of such animals as were killed in snares, and whose biood was not poured forth."—Gloag. The Jews were forbidden to eat these, as coming under the larger restriction that follows: 4. "Blood” was forbidden the Jews as an article of diet (Inductive Study 71 because blood was a svmbol of life, which was to be held sacred, and of sacrifice, which was to be revere!d It was the holy token of the remission of sin (Heb. 8: 22). Their most preclous religious ideals urged the Jews to abstaln from blood; but among the Gentiles it was, in various forms, would be a little self-ienial on the part of the Gentiles, while failure to do so would make it almost impossible for Jew and Gentlle Christians to

The largest ever built to piv the western rivers tows | coal on the Ohio and Mississippi riv- | ers: It is made almost exclusively of% steel and is twice as powerful as the | next largest boat. The coal mwingi capacity ‘of this peculiarly construct | ed steamer when in barges hold!ngi 12,004 bushels each would cover an area egual to a city block. .
The fact that the river boats are still duilt on the same lines as those of 50 years ago is not due to lack of invention on the part of the builders, but they are retained on acount of the
peculiarities of the streams on which they are used. Exhaustive tests have proved that the old original type of. construction with the stern wheel is far better than any of the other types.
. The “sleeve dog of China” is the rar. est breed of dog in the world. With the head of a pug. he has the under jaw and characteristic “wheel back” of the bulldog, a type to which his body conformation closely approximates. He has the same bowed {orelegs, short in proportion to the hind legs, and quarters lightly made in comparison with his broad and masgive front, Altogether he ig the quaintest and most delightful of toy dogs, but so jealously is he cherished by the royal family of China that it is difficult to obtain a really good specimen. : :
Efforts Not All Wasted.
A Geneva ear and throat specialist declares that yvyawning is helpful; In fact, that it is one of the most beneficial forms of exercise. Hereafter speakers who are a little shy on eloquence may know that at least they do some good to their agditors.
