When lightning struck the howme of Daoland C. i{lm at Gostien, & babe was torn from s mother's arms and tarned & complete someraaalt. The mother was severely stunned and s domentic was thrown to the floor. All were rendered unconscious for nearly ap hour. The babe escaped practi. eally unharmed and without burns of any kind.
The Wolf Lake Trolley says that the executive committee has ehanged the date for the fourth annual Onion Day at Wolf Lake, from August 19 o Thuarsday, August 28, one week later. It was discovered that Waolf Lake had chosen the date of the Old Settlers’ meeting at Columbia City. Mr. Jackson’s *The Prince of Sweden' company has just finished a successful season and will go out again next fall. Mr. Jackson had been absent from Goshen two yeart.
The jury in the circuit court at Lagrange, after deliberating fifty-one hours, returned a verdict finding Joseph Barcelona guilty of murder in the first degree and fixed his punishment at life imprisonment. Bareellona is an [talian laborer and he was convicted of having fatally stabbed Alva Triteh, who had ejected him from a dance at Elmira in February. Two companions of Barcelonoa are in jail awaiting trial on the same charge.
Miss Critton, the trained nurse who was taken to Fort Wayne last Wednesday for an operation is reported taq‘xdly improving and will recover. The operation preformed by Dr. Rosinthal, assisted by Drs. Clapp and Black, was successful and was the only thing that could have saved the patient's life. Miss Critton had been the nurse of Sol Mier during his late illness and it was Mr. Mier who made it possible for her to go to the hospital. :
The campaign being inaugurated by the State Board of Health against the housefly is made possible by the strengthening of the pure focd law by the last session of the legislature. By the amended law the inspectors of the state board have the positive and unquestioned right to go into food establishments and to bring prosecution unless the wares on sale are properly protected from the flles. Circular letters of warning are now being sent out and these will be followed by inspections, and unless orders are ocbeyed the inspections will be followed by prosecutions.

Aundrew J. Briggs, one of the oldest and best known farmers of Whitley county, was killed last Sunday by falling down the stairs at his home anst of Columbia City. Although 200 men are now working steadily on the change of the sigual service, as well a 8 a large number in the roadmaster's department, it is eodfidently predicted that the change will not be made before July 1, and possibly not them. Ounly good luck saved one of them from a frightfal fall and perhaps fatal injuries. Last Friday it was announced that the Lake Shore had npgropflued $5.800000 and the New York Central $5,700.000 for improvements and equip ment. President Brown said that the loaded car movement on the New York Central Lines for April was the heaviest since April, 1907. They moved 260,871 more loaded cars than they did during April 1908, The firat flve days of May showed an average increase of between 9,000 and ‘and 10,000 loads a day and indicate lthe largest Joaded car movement of May in the history of the road.
