Tug Comes into Port—Rescue = Effort Fails. - "~ New Haven, Cenn, May bs~—Four persons were drowned and a total of eight barges lost during a fierce storm off Faulkpers island. Word of the disaster was brought to this city by the tug Hokendauqua., The four persons drowned were the captain of the barge Susquehanna, in tow of the tug Charles B. Sanford, his wife, a cabin boy and a deck-hand. The barge had been blown ashore on Faulkner's island and the party, so far as can be learned, had attempted to save themselves by taking to the small boat. This, however, had been smashed against the side of the barge and the four were drowned. o - The Sanford, from New York to Providence with a tow of nine barges, when off Faulkner's island ran into a heavy gale, and the hawsers parted, four of the barges, the Moosic, Susquehanna, Wyoming and Anthracite, drifting ‘away. Two of these later sunk, the Susquehanna went on the rocks, and the Wyoming was later recovered.
