Young one of the most promivent men of our conuty, died at his home near Wolf Lake last Thursbay morning at the age of sixty. For years Mr. Young was s sufferer from a:-tiamarand he died after an acute attack that came upon him twelve weeks ago. He was a prominent Democrat and & man of wide influence. _ we Mrs. George White, living north of the city, who has been suffering for several days from an attack u? appendicitis, was operated upon Tuesday afternoon by Dr. F R. Clapp assisted by Drs. Black of this city and Vaughn of Topeka, and if no complieations arise the lady will recover. The operation saved a life for the appendix was found in very bad coundition, having been ruptured but a short time hefore. :

Tuesday afternoon while working about a’' saw mill en the Kionison farm northwest of the city, W. D. Oliver lost his right hand by coming in gcontact with thesaw. Mr. Oliver, who . recently came here from Illinois and lives on the Growcock farm, was under the saw and in some way threw his hand up too high. Dr. Shobe made the amputation at the wrist. The injured man was a well-known farmer. and about 55 years old.

An organized effort is being made to make May lst a geveral cleaning up day in all the cities and towns of the state. The appeal is made that city authorities see that all %üblic buildings, school yarde and buildings, back yards and alleys are thoroughly ecleaned and the rabbish carted away. The results of this first clean up day in Indiana should be so encouraging that it will conrinue to be observed from year to year, a very unique May-day in our state.

M. Henoch of Laporte one of the traveling saleamen of that citv spent Thursday here ealling on his customers. He states that no local opt tion election has been called in LaPorte connty yet: that the petitioners bave been unable to secure the required number of signatures, and that in Michigan City, with 4.650 votes, only 400 signatures could be secured. The supply car is mads of about one-third of a box car and the balance a flat car. John Wirley of Elkbart, the Lake Shore track master, conceived the idea. It does away with thefts at tool houses.

N. P. Eagles and Eli Smith, two of our venerable and worthy townsmen celebrated their birthday anniversaries in a quiet manner. Mr. Eagles has rounded out eighty-five years while Mr. Smith has eeen eighty-two winters.. On his natal day Mr. gmit-h was compelled to remain in bed as he has been ill with rheumatism and grippe for the past few weeks. Mr, Eagles and Mr, Smith are neighbors and both are held in high esteem and respect by a large cirele of friends and acquaintances.—Democrat.

Considerable work has been put on the grounds at the Ligonier Driving Park already this spring. The trazk is in excellent condition and the trainers are already at work developing some very promising young borses. It is expected the first matinee meeting will be held earlyin May as there is already considerable interest among the horsemen in this part of the state, Those who know say that the track here is one of the best in Northern Indiana and when completed the grounds will be made attractive and easy of access.
