Wayne vounty was put down as one of the sure temperace counties and the anti-saloon league was expecting & big boost when the votes were counted. Thelvote was very large, the rural districts being represented at the polls almost to a man, The business men and property owners in Richmond, however, protested against the crusade and formed a splendid organization. making the fight in favor of high license and seusible, restrictions. The wets carried Kich mond by an overwhelming vote, the drys uot carrying a single ward in the city. ’ ' ‘ - . ' R R i . The legal tangle in Whitley county may delay the local option election for several months.. The county commissioners have called the election for March 6th, but an appeal taken to the higher court may stop the proceedings. * E R & ww : i _ It keeps'the LaGrange county officials busy chasing after blind tigers and other kinds of illegal game. This highly moral community seems to be having a hard time to maintain its reputation and at the same time afford good fat fees for the deputy prosecutor and other officers of the court. - - * xx eww g : The Springfield Republican hopes that our naval esgablishment can bé reorganized to better effort than our printing establishment, which is one of the most glaring example of profligacy in public ownership of what should all be done by private individuals. Itgoeson tosay: : 1t is an amazing fact the government printery hae been so far discredited that congress has embodied in the census bill a provision that the next census may be printed by private establishment at the discretion of the director of the census,on account of the high cost of printing in the government plant. Figures were presented in the house debate showing that the estimates of the government printer for printing the census were hundreds of thousands of dollars in excess of the estimate of the director of the census, derived, no doubt, from private establishments. Usually congross ‘‘stands’ for this sort of thing, and the fact is interesting that in this case it revolted against the exactions of its own offspring. A remarkable situation is roa:ged when a printery maintained by the government has to be avoided by the government itself on account of the ofimueu of its work. : o o : : , v ® PE ®ER e : Ligonier, ln"'commog with other cities and communities will celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of the great emancipator Abraham Lincoln. The Grand Army of the Republic and the Womans Relief Corps of this city have arranged an appropriate program for the occasion, to be given at the M.
