Alfaifa Leaf Affected By the Rust Fungus (Uromyces Striatus). of the leaf also. Badly affdeted leaves wilf turn yellow #@nd drop off, thus redueing the forage vaiue of fhe hay by making it more stemmy,. The yieid {s siotreduced through the loss of the fallen leaves and by the ‘weakenidg of {he plant. The brown spots are catmed By the growth of - fungus threads or myeelium through the ins terior tisswes of the leaf, which they destroy snd cause to tarn browa. Soon mats of fungus tissue are formed which prod#ee small pustules near the cepter of th% spot. These pustules consist of nuidrous sack-like bodies, each of which bw#ars eight spores. Between the sack-I'ke bodies may be seen: non-sporé-beéarfag thregds which are called paraphyses. When the spores are ripe theéy are seét free and blown by the wind or knocked by dashfng rains to the leaves of other plants which: they soon infect. - The most practical treatmient for this disease is frequent cutting All of the hay should be removed from, the field as early as possible in order that few shattered leaves may be left on the ground By this means most of the spores are-removed from the field, leaving the new shoots comparatively free from infection. Whenever this leafspot hecomes very damaging it is best to cut the alfalfa, whether it is ready or not, and allow the hay to remaip on the ground long enough
