Building at Humphreys, Ark., Dynamited Because of Qbjection to * Negro Postmaster. - Clarendon, Ark., March 2.—Because of the objection to the negro postmaster of Humphreys, in" Arkansas county, who, it is stated, was appointed notwithstanding the protests of a great majority of the white citizens served, the post office building there was dynamited and completely destroyed early Monday by unidentified persons. Great excitement exists in the district because of the deed, and considerable racial prejudice is expressed. . *
The postmaster before the present one was a negro by the name of Toms. While he was in office dissatisfaction was generally expressed. Toms was convicted of robbing the registered mails and sentenced to serve a term in the penitentiary. When the present postmaster was appointed, after a time, dissatisfaction was again v6iced. The demolishment of the post office is thought to have been the result. The postmaster was not in the building at the time. So powerful was the force of the explosion that the office 'was blown to pieces and a deep hole now marks the site. It is stated that but little mail was in the office at the time, and practieally no money or valuable packages. The identity of the wreckers is unknown, : i i & —_— ; Lynching Feared.
