Last, kriday our: neighbors, O. S. Randolph and Walter Jordan "vap&erd horses, and on Saturday morning Mr. Randolph buried his horse, havinF him hardly fifteen hours. Mr. Jordan learning this fact promptly returned the horse in his possession to Mr, Randolph, feeling that he'could got retain the animal conscientiously under the circumstances. But Mr. Randolph, who iz a man of generous impulses -and one who will abide by a bargain, refused to take the horse back, telling Mr. Jordan to keep it for two years and if he could not within that tume sell it for'a fair price, then he might return it. This transaction, though small in itself, has served to bring to the surface the honest nature of the two 'gentlemen involyed. ‘Would to Heaven there were more such in the county! then in just so many more homes there would be hianging on the wall that little framed admonition—**Live and lot live’’—and -it wouldn’t be a dead letter, either. =+« -

The Markets.

CHiCAGO, Oct. 11. —The rain fer which people have so leng been locking came today, but the break in wheat which had been predictéd as a consequence of the weather change did not come. i =2

On the contrary the market was Inclined to be'sirong on its own sccount and a very little speculative feyer would haye put it up sharply.. .As it was, December opened a fraction be-. low the -close of Saturday. and after dropping to 91 made & good rally and seended to have inherent strength. The factis admitted that under no circum- * gtances can a normal acreage be seeded . to. winter wheat. The drouttg]hal already accomplished that much: What more it may do it is-for the future to tell, The present rans, go far as practical results are. concerned, mean uothing. If they are followed at the proper times and in proper quantity by others the best use can be made of the opportunity remaining, bat it is impossible that an :_weraflg amount of Winter wheat can be put into -the. ground, . = Ny - By reason of the damage admittedly accomplished the friends of wheat are uot anxious to sell their holdings.. Lyery 'week makes it more apparent that there will Be periodic- buying all ‘winter by Europe, which gets from ‘time. to time only enough for the act~ - ual wants of a month or so, and there are many weather chances en the bull Bide of wheat in this country between now and spring. - : i Corn is' also well .thought of. llts position has been bettered by the fact. that there is not as much long specuiation.in it as there was a short time ago. Schwartz, Dupee & Co., who haye secured extra good advices on the corn crop, say that the damage by drought has never been overestimated . and a 3 they fizure a considerable decrease from the government estimate ‘of yield, it seems that“present prices will not seem high when all the facts concerning corn are in, L 2 There has been practically no market in° provisions for a- week. The yellow fever of course killed the trade from the South, but in-addition to this stocks are large, and with no particular speculative iiterest in the market of course this “creates stagnation. : Following 1s the price range today: , Vo High Low Close | Wheat—Deo .......$ 91%-% § 91 $ 91% —May........ . 913 - - 9014 903 v0rn—Dec......... 29 285 8% ~May......... 3¥ = 8% 3% 0at5—Ded......... . 19% 19%-3% 19%. —May......... 22% 2 oy Pork—Dec.. ....... 787 TI2 ‘TBO 4 —Jan......... 880 875 872 ..+ Lard—Dec..... .... 4,32 4287 421 oAI ... 44T 0 442 442 .
