THE U. B. CHURCH TROUBLE, A Serious Split in the Denomination : : Threatened. i 3 ‘The action of the U. B. church conference, at the recent session in York, Pa., in rescinding that rule of the chureh djscipline which prohibited members from affiliating with any secret organization, and which led to the withdrawal of one bishop and several delegates from the conference, ‘threatens to disrupt the church, and bring on one of those interminable church litigations that are so damaging to not only the particular church involved, but all other churches. The many readers of THE BANNER among the members of the U. B. church, are of course deeply interested in all that relates to this unfortunate disagree‘ment among the leaders and members of that denomination, and we therefore propose to give from week to ‘week such developments as may be made public in rejation to the matter from which ever side of the controversy they may come. ‘T'he following dispatch appears in' the Indianapolis News:
DusßLiN, Ind., June 12.—1 t is known to the public generally that an unfortunate division hasarisen in the United Brethren church, culminating at the general conference recently held at York, Pa., and, as one result of the schism, serious trouble is impending concerning which faction will still be the ‘‘old church,”” and which will be entitled to the church property, including the publishing house, book concern and, infact, everything which has heretofore been its financial basis. A contest will be made in the courts, and a test case is to be initiated at this pomt, as Dublin has always been a stronghold of the denomination. The trustees of the church here stand three to two in favor of the ‘*old church,” and for some time it has been understood that the ¢liberals’’ under the leadership of Bishop Weaver, of Dayton, Obhio, would begin a series of meetings at that place on or about the 10th of this month. A majority of the trustees, backed by the society, concluded 1t would not be advisable to permit the Weaver following the use of the church, and when the ‘liberals”’ presented themselves, they found the doors clesed. The Methodist church was then secured, and a large audience attended, many being attracted by the excitement prevailing among the regular United Brethren membership. Contrary to expectation, however, Bishop Weaver did not refer to the controversy in his discourse. Yesterday Bishop Weaver made a statement of the issue invelyed, and last night religious seryices were again held. The refusal of the ‘‘old church’’ trustees to permit the use of the church property by Bishop Weaver and the ‘diberals’’ bas precipitated the issue, and a test case is being prepared for submission to the courts.
A Misstatement.
{ The New Albany manufacturers willj pay their employes by the hour instead of by the day. This is done to comply with the law passed by the late legislature. —Kendallville Standard. No, it is not ; it is done to evade and, if possible, nullify the law that was passed by the late Legislature. Whenever a law is passed that employers think or imagine.conflicts with their interests, they are quick to ‘‘comspire” together and endeavor to defeat it. They have no hesitation in becoming law-breakers when they deem it their interest to do so, and the authorities, who are sworn to enforce the laws, complacently wink at their lawlessness. But let the victims of their avarice and oppression club together to right their wrongs and assert their manhood, and these self-same law-breaking employers cry aloud for “law and order’’ with all the vigor their lungs afford them; and they always find newspapers ready to ‘‘crook the pregnant hinges of the knee that thrift may follow fawning,” to re-echo their cry. Nobody can plead ignorance as to what the design, intent and spirit of this Eight-hour law is, viz: to shorten the hours of labor,i 80 that the laborer would have more time for rest, relaxation and self-im-provement. Te hire men by the hour, and to work them over eight hours, is simply a transparent dodge to set the law at defiance. All the subterfuges of this kind that the manufacturers and all other employers of labor may resort to to defeat this law will in the end prove futile. The working men of today are intelligent and earnest, and determined to emancipate their children if net themselves from the unna‘tural position in which a false civiliza\tion has placed them. They are determined that as they are the producers 'of the world’s wealth they shall enjoy their fair share of it—and that they shall be afforded reasonable time in which to enjoy it, teo. These are facts, and the sooner pgople bring their minds to contemplate them from some other than the employers’ point of view, the soouer they will realize their full significance. Caieae e
