Frederick Dragoo, of Valentine, was the unhappy victim of some sharpers while in town last Tuesday. He was invited to the Central Hotel to look at some samples of piece goods, and in the mean time was asked to make change for fifty dollars. - While doing 80 he laid down his pocket-book, which was picked up by one of the flends, who walked off with two hundred dollars. Dragoo became aroused at this, but was silenced by another confidence scoundrel, who said, “Never mind, he’ll be back in a moment.” But a g‘]oggent pagsed and no retyrn, and it ag then toq laté to capture the thief, 1l confidence on such occasions, uness extraordinarily well founded, is best under lock and key.—ZLagrangs Democrat, , :

Te the Chairmen ofthe ‘Central Committee of LaGrange and Noble counties: Gentlemen :—Having been notified of the intent of the Democrats of the aforesaid counties to place my name upon the democratic ticket as a candidate for. Joint Senator, I thank you for the honor you bestow upon me in this way, but will here say, that I will be under the necessity of declining to accept, for reasons I need not herein state. Hoping this may be satisfactory, I remain, Very Respectfully. . : Y . W. H. CONE.
" LIGONIER, IND., OcCT. 9, 1880, To the democratic voters of Noble county: The foregoing letter from Mr. W. H. Cone, declining to be a candidate on the democratic ticket for Senator from the counties of LaGrange and Noble, was received too late to appear in the BANNER. We therefore avail ourselves of this opportunity to make the declination of Mr. Core known to the Democracy of Noble county. The jnexpediency of nominating a candidate for Joint Senator upon the eve of our State election must be apparent to every thinking man, and hence no argument is necessary.. The action of Mr. Core, therefore, leaves the Democracy of the counties of LaGrange and Noble without & candidate for said office, and in view of the emergency, and the absence of the Chairman of the County Central Committee, Mr. J. B. Stoll, we, the undersigned citizens of Noble county, have ordered that the name of Philo. P. Miner, of LaGrange county, be placed upon the democratic ticket for Joint Senator from said counties. y November. | - 1f Democrats are true to themselves and to their country,” they will not abate their zeal for the Presidential ticket. Admitting. all thats claimed by the Republicans of Indiana, it does not follow that the democratic cause is lost in November. Gen. Hancock is 10,000 stronger than any candidate on the democratic ticket in October. To allow the defeat claimed by the Re-: publicans to demoralize the democratic party of Indiana would be to the %ast. extreme discreditable. We call upon Democrats to preserve their organization—to not abate their zeal, but to *up and at them.” The republican party has exhausted its resources. Indiana is to-day Democratic. With proper effort it can be carried for Hancock and English. What is wanted 18 nerve, spine, sand. Just now there is a good deal of brass-horn Republicanism on the streets. Let it go for what it is worth, Let Democrats preserve their organizations and pertect them. Hancock, the “Superb,” leads the Democracy of the country to-day, and, though a defeat has overtaken the party in Indiana, by a united effort we cam win in November.
