Ié ' RailioadTrains Blown Off the Track. 7 _ HOUSES UNROOFED.
7/ STEAMBOATS BLOWN TO PEICES! 7 The gale on Thursday evening was, %, in some portions of the State of unpre--7 cedented violence. It covered a large 7/ extent of territory, and everywhere its J-track is markéd with painful damage to : 'Ei'operty,’ and, gerha_ps, as further inteligence will show, loss of life. It 7, seems to have crossed the Mississippi, 7 neat Oquawka, to have extended Bast- ° ‘ward, at least, as far as Mcliean county, Z where we hear of some of its disastrous g effects. In the west there was much hail % accompanying the wind, and everywhere ~ a great fall of rain. 'We hear that at - Lexington, on the lineof the St. Louis, 7 Alton & Chicago Road, the storm was 7 terriffic. - In a letter below we are told / of its freaks with the up train ; and an _ informant at our elbow says that every ‘house in town wag unroofed or blown fi down. The air- was loaded with the 7 wreck which was made; the heavens fi were black with clouds, which were / pouring out destruction, and more than ; the end of all things was at hand. If * Lexington has escaped without great ~ loss of life, the fact is most wonderful - . At this point there was a copious '~ rain, and some ' thunder and lightniug ; - but nothing to indicate the destruetion ‘going on elsewhere. The evening - steamers left port as usual, and theugh the gale was high, it wag not unusual. ‘Later in"the evening, the wind increased, but before ten o'clock all was still ~again. e Below we print a hasty letter from - Lexington, kindly forwarded by an officer of the road: : ; - LexixaroN, May 13, 1858. .+ Eprrors Trisuxg:—This evening: about six o’clock, we were visited by a severe storm, accompanied by the most - fearful thunder and lightning ever ex- . ‘perienced . here, The storm’ lasted - about twenty minutes, and, after it had _'to all appearance cleared up, it was suc~ceeded %y the most terrific wind ever - known in this sestion of the State.-——‘ i The rain fell in torrents, and nearly ev.ery house in Lexington was unroofpd and many of them blown down. w . .The passenger train from St. Louis, ‘by which I send this, was blown from the track and the cars tipped over, but, with the exception of a few slight flesh wounds, the passengers were uninjured. DBefore the train capsized the car windows on the windward side were blown out, the engineer and “fireman were both blown from the engine, ~ and a brakeman was also blown off one of the cars. The storm struck the train a short distance north from here. i g il STORM. -~ We learn from a passenger on the _ above capsized train, that great damage: ~was done by the tornado at the junction of the Peoria and Oquawka roads ~ with the St. Louis Alton & Chicago " Railroads. DBoth station-houses were
- unrooffed, five or six empty freight cars ‘ ; were blown from the tra k, dwelling “houses were moved bodily tweaty or : , thigy feet, or entirely demolished, and ~yet; amid all this wide spread disaster he could hear of no one seriously injurs ed. C. M. Cady, mr. Eberhart (editer and proprietor of the Northwestern . Home Journal,) and other ¢itizens of Chicago were on the capsized train, but. cscaped unhurt. ' All hear testimony to the coolness and eflleiency of the conductor, Mr, L. D. Williaws. ; THE STORM AT PEORIA. - From one of our citizens who was _in Peoria at the time, we-learn the fol“lowing particulars of the Tavages of the _‘great storm at that place. The huricane struck the city at abont 5 o’clock iu the evening. In the twinkling of an eye, fifteen or twenty houses were unroofed, every church spire in the city blown down, three canal hoats loaded with lumber sunk, and the steamer*Olin “with twenty-one passengers on board, made a complete wreck, her cabin being ' blown entirely away. = ¢ |
-+ And what seems really mriraculous, is the fact that but one life was lost in all this furious disorganization of matter and utter demolition of structures. It is said thata little child was lost from off the wrecked steamer. The lumber in the yards was blown all over the eity, the gas lamps were all blown ‘down, and the signs were sent flying in every direction; windows. nng' gable . ends weré*smashed in, whole traing of cars were blown off the track, and the . beautiful College building upon the . bluff utterly demolished. W};O shall - probably get more extended particulars »?-tfie‘ mails. Our informant was _ obliged to .take refuge in the Court . House square, to avoid the general éw wmbith«matened the vity, - and to escape the flying signs, boands, mm;,m minfi&g '%ifi which the St T
