. The N.Y. ‘Herald’ on Lecompton. " The New York Herald is the ablest and boldest' defender of the Lecompton villainy the President has in his employ. | A fow months ago it was fierce in’ its hostility to that measure. Take the following as a specimen ' of its language and sentiments: v Sy ' Form the New York Herald Nov. 18,1857, .- A regency or provisional government is emr;fim,»wgth dictatorial powers, of which Mr. John Calhoun is the chief, under the title of Governor, and this regency is to go into operation immediately. ‘ S : Nyow, this beats Topeka Government of Generals Lane and Robinson, all hollow. 1t surpasses anything we have seen of the political pretensions of Brig- | ham Young; for, with all his assumptions of divine right and squatter sovereignty, he has never so flat}‘y repudi- | ated the supreme authority of the Gen- | eral Government as these Lecompton | Constitution makers. Their proceedwngs are without a parallel, and: there s nothing like a precedent for them in | the case of any other Territory of the | ~=#éon, past or present. On the con- | trary, the Federal Constitution, the organic law of Kansas, ALL, POPULAR | RIGHTS, and Territorial forms and} usages, are boldly set at defiance by these Lecompton disorganizers. Wl * v We have no fears of the ultimate issue of this Lecompton movement.— It win rarnL. The partiesinterested in it cannot entertain a serious hope of its ‘success. A L " The above needs no key to explain its curious harmony with the present | phase of the Herald's editorials. It was when uttered, an honest” unpremeditated expression of opinion, given to the world at the time when the first publication of the Lecompton contrivance shocked the understanding of every patriot in the land.: ’ ; s € <8 @) B & s Tne YANKEE PEpLAR—The impor, tance of -improving“your own stock, if you are going into the wool business, is very emphatically enforced in the” folJlowing capital story: ’ “Some ycars ago, I was traveling on the jcastern shores of Maryland, and stopped for the night at the house of a ‘gentleman by the name of Jones. e was not at home, but his wife received me very politely, though I was in the capacity of.a traveling merchant, a peripatetic vender of notions, vulgarly calledpedlar. She made a few purchases of articles useful in the family, an( might have bought more, had not Mr. Jones returned unexpectedly and commenced abusing me most roundly, and said he didn’t want any pedlars about his house. Igave him back the change in his own coin till he cooled dotn, when I asked him what made him mad ‘atall ‘gentlemenr in my line of business?’ He told me: “A few months ago, a Yankee pedlar ‘was about here selling his tin ware and taking pay in anything he could get.— My neighbor farmer,: Mr. Brown, had a very troublesomé ram. One time he jumped the fence and got into the wheat, and another day into ‘the corn, and was always wher¢ he had no business to be. - One day’ just as theé farmer had got him out and tied up, this Eer“ar,qz_xme along and wanted to sell is tin' ware.” i : . “Mr. Brown said he would sell him the old ram and take his pay in tiy.— 'The pedlar took him up, offering him two dollars worth of his truck in-ex-change for the ugly old sheep. The farmer agreed, picked out his tin things, -~ the pedlar hoisted the ram, with legs tied, into his cohfounded old cart, and drove right along here to my house, and had the impudence, yes, the scoundrel had!—to tell me the ram had beeri’ imported from England by ordér of one of the rich fairmers, Jeffers, down the country, and ke had agreed to take itto him; it had cost $2OO on landing, and he was to have $250 for it when ‘he delivered it to Mr. Jeffers, but he! was 80 tired of having the plaguy thing in his wagon that he would take $lOO for it the first chance he could get.- I Was quite anxious to improve my stock, and thought this so fine an oppertuuity to buy an improved full blood, as the rascal warranted it to be, that I paid the fellow $lOO, and he cut the strings ‘and let the ram run. e Sure enough he did run, llfull split, right over the fence, andl after him, and my niggers coming on, in fifteen minutes my ram niggers, and I fotched wup in Brown’s yard, when I found I had been sold as well as that rascally old ~sheep. Before I got back, the pedlar ~had sold ten dollars’ worth of wooden nutmegs and nonsense to my wife, and had ‘gone off to parts unknown, He never came this way again; and if you are one of that sort you had better put mp your traps and be moving.” ~“Finally I previiled on him to let me stop till morning, and to. accept a - few yankee notions wihout fee or reward. . Buthe will never forget that $lOO and -his neighbor'syam,” ~ g & ik gt 3 *" @A French engineer was traveling _upon ‘an -old Ohio steamboat.” He obwerved to the captain: B s engine s svy poor “That's sO,” was the reply. . o por Ly lomg fagem gipect to +* “THll it bursts,’ was the cool reply. b b laniisg, plaee thers o rmichan Jod sbourd i &~ To the end that what you may desire may bo advantageous to you, ney#x desire anything but that '&“
[ Correspondence of the N. Y. Times.] ~ . Washington, March 17.1858. - .The Lecomptonites are in great alarm to night. They begin %0 see that the bill is certain of defeat—a fact to which they have been slow to open their eyes hitherto, so sure were they - that power and patronage are invincible. They 'will modify their tacties, be assured.— 'The first step, doubtless, will be initia'ted through Calhoun, who, in view of some new revelation, will discoyer that the Free State Legislature of Kansas ‘were elected on the 4th of Jan. last, and will issue ‘cortificates accordingly — This “gudgeon to catch whales,” l{ow-' ever, will avail nothing. 1t will furnish excuse for the treachery of no more: porfessed Anti-Lecompton men than would have found somie other pretext, if that were wanting. - brmiedeid BeFAt a meeting held after the concert, on Tuesday evening, given by Mr..
